Hello.

i am working with a screenwriter/director who has a dual g5 with final cut pro.

i have given him some dv tapes of footage we shot and he has been unable to come up with settings that seem to match the footage.

could someone do me a favor and give me a short step by step list on how to create a project and properly capture dvx-100 footage shot with the anamorphic lens (panasonic one)

i am totally unfamilar with FCP.

If it was shot anamorphic, then your settings need to match that. You should be capturing in "DV NTSC 48KHz Anamorphic" and your sequence settings should be the same.

With an anamorphic adapter you need to leave the capture settings at NTSC48k. (NOT 16x9)There is no 16x9 flag embedded in the capturing. FCP just see's it as a normal 3x2 clip. Make your sequence settings 16x9 anamorphic. Choose the clips that you captured one by one and hit command-9 (opens up the properties dialogue box) and then click on anamorphic. If you are viewing out to a tv monitor and you want to see the video in it's letterbox form (assuming your monitor doesn't do 16x9) you need to make the sequence NTSC48k, but be warned that this will tax the processor, on my dual 2.0 ghz with one layer and maybe a title it plays in real time but anything more and rendering is required. Good Luck!

Just for those searching out more information on this subject...
Reading through the Final Cut Manual states the following:

If you used an anamorphic lens:
Those using an anamorphic lens to achieve the 16:9 look are actually recording their
footage at a 4:3 aspect ratio. As a result, it is not automatically identified as 16:9
material by Final Cut Pro. If you are using an anamorphic lens, turning on the
Anamorphic 16:9 option in the Capture Preset Editor marks all subsequently captured
clips as Anamorphic 16:9, regardless of whether or not they are actually supposed to
be. Make sure you deselect this box when recording regular, non-anamorphic 4:3
material.
