Project not loading in CS5.5

I would have posted this at Adobe.com but I can't log in and the chat reps couldn't figure out why.

I have been working in an AE project (CS5.5) for well over a year now. It never gave me any issues until today. When I try to load the project it gets to 38% and stops loading. I don't get any errors, it just stops. The Premiere Pro project that it shares some files with also doesn't load anything from the AE project.

Is there a way to repair or retrive any of the comps in there?

It seems that Dynamic Link might be creating the issue but I am not sure. I haven't tried reinstalling or repairing with the set up discs yet, I wanted to post about it first.

Thanks for any help.

A new development has occurred. If I open the related project file in PP it opens, but says there are 115 files still waiting to load and all of the AE comps are listed as offline. I opened the AE project linked to this with PP still open and it opened all the way. I can import sequences using dynamic link into AE but dynamic link doesn't function inside of PP. AE closed like it should when I saved and closed it, but PP stopped responding and made me close when prompted by windows.

It still is not working, but at least I got in to the comps in the file. Still thinking DL was corrupted but who knows?

When projects gets stuck, AE is often struggling with a video file that is corrupted. Whenever you use Dynamic Link, it really complicates the matter because the corruption can be in either Premiere or AE. In addition, Dynamic Link is designed to work with Creative Suite, but not the separate applications. So if you've loaded the apps separately (or maybe RE-loaded one of the apps?) D-L can get fussy. Also, not sure, but you've hinted that maybe you DLinked from Premiere to AE and then DLinked the result back to Premiere, which could cause all sorts of problems.

Some suggestions: Adobe apps save sequential versions of the working copy of projects (unless you've turned that feature off.) You may be able to open your previous saved version. You'll need to do a search because the location of the copies varies depending on PC/Mac and operating system.

Or, try opening a new project with the same settings, then importing your old project into it. That often works, or at least gives you a useful error message.

My strategy for complex/big projects: I start each day by duplicating the project file and suffixing it with the date. That way, any corruption will likely only loose one-day's work.

Jim,
Thanks so much for the insight.

The workflow for this is based mostly in PP in which I use DL to bring in comps created in AE. Not in this instance but there are times where I copy clips for correction/keying from PP to AE, but I don't think I ever bring sequences from PP to AE and then back to PP. All of my exporting goes through PP.

I think this problem stemmed from my software locking up either before or during a save before shutting down. That could support the idea that one of the comps/sequences was corrupted in that process and is hanging it up when trying to load it. I haven't added anything to the adobe suite or to my system recently. I will look into both of your suggestions and see what happens.

And I like the idea of saving and dating the project files. I will put that in play starting today.

Thanks again for the response.

I just discovered the issue goes beyond my current project. I tried to load a similar project that uses DL to connect between PP and AE. I read somewhere that you should load AE first and then PP and this is where I had issues yesterday with the original file. AE would just stop at 38% while loading and sit. I opened a different project in AE and it worked fine. When I opened the PP file for this other project it refused to load the files that were Dynamic Linked from AE. All of them show as offline.

I think my next plan of attack is to reinstall the Adobe Suite and see if that helps.

I tried to import the old file into a new one and it worked. But when I try to open the new file it stops loading at 17%. I even tried deleting the comps I was working on over the last few days but it is still not communicating the way it should. Sadly I did not have auto save selected on AE but I did on PP. Hopefully a reinstall will fix this issue.

After 2 hours on the phone with Adobe the issue was still not fixed. We uninstalled & reinstalled and created new users but AE still froze at 37-38%.

On a whim I decided to move the AE file into a subfolder and it then loaded all the way. I opened PP and they were talking again once I linked the file to the new location. But once the link was established I found I could not close and reopen AE or it would freeze. I then moved it back to where it was, opened AE successfully and the re linked them when it opened in PP and it worked again. Something in this file doesn't want to play nice but at least I found a way to get through it. Other projects that share PP and AE via Dynamic Link seem to be working fine. As long as I move it and break the link before opening I should be OK.

I would like to say that the technicians at Adobe were very patient and did everything they could to try and fix it. Thanks Vinnie and Ashish!

Thanks for keeping this updated. Whenever I have run into similar problems I typically just did some effect, or just brought in a new file. I do what the poster above stated in opened another of the 'saved' versions to help me get back. Once I do that and that 'saved' version works, I then save it immediately to another name. And bring the comp as close up to the file or effect as I had before. Often I will stop right before save it again under yet a new name. Then try and recreate my mistake or corrupting influence. That way I KNOW what it was and what I did.

Summary: I think there is an effect you used and/or a file you used and it isn't in good shape or Pisses off AE/PP
