Project Greenlight [Ongoing Discussion]

SciFi is showing the first 3 episodes back-to-back-to-back right now on the east coast. Anyone else getting this? The schedule says nothing about it but I just happened to flip through.

I saw that. It was good to catch up, for no other reason than to see that Gulager uses a DVX to shoot weddings. I wonder if that's what he shot his entry on.

She should be fired for undermining everyone. This show is indeed a horror. No wonder so many Hollywood movies suck.

Ditto on the casting director, she has confirmed everything I suspected about her from the beginning. She is everything she tried to make people believe Gulager was. I'm surprised by the way they have treated Gulager. The script has been rewritten time and again and the two knuckleheads who wrote it suddenly were too important to do rewrites then complained about the rewrites(I guess they found out they wern't as important as they thought they were). They expect him to direct actors he's not passionate about, a script no one likes and create "his vision of the movie" . What a shame Project Greenlight has deteriorated into shameless staged reality tv. I kind of feel like Gulager was cast into a pit of vipers with no chance of not being bitten. If he has an opinion he's too inexperienced and if he doesn't he's too aloof. The editing is painfully obvious to create drama and conflict encouraged. Ultimately if things went smoothly would anyone watch?

Can someone tell me what the difference between Gulager wanting people he knows to be cast and the casting director wanting someone she knows? She said herself that the reason she fought so hard for Navi is because, one - she has worked with her before, two - she knows she can play the part of heroine, and three - she is her friend. Weren't those the same criteria that Gulager had when trying to cast his girlfriend/wife? I dunno, I thought the CD made herself look like a flaming hypocrite.

i have met several people like that casting director in this industry. where does this additude come from? it is like they all went to the same school? a lot of people seem to get that way because of the ladders they wish to climb. she has no respect for the director or the producers and would jump in to bed with or is already blowing someone at the studio. she saw gulager's weakness and exploited it to get her way. to watch her 'stand her ground' when she was spotted as a total hypocrite was painful and sad. if this film should crash and burn, it should be blamed on the studio.

Dang, I missed last week's ep.... I totally hope Gulagar pulls this off! Then he can go from being called incompetent, to eccentric and unorthodox.

No doubt. I first I hated Gulager but now I just hate the studio. First they picked the stupidest, most dumbest script I've ever heard of. "Feast?"...the name sounds stupid. The writers don't even seem to care about it. This just goes to show how stupid studio execs are.

But if this movie fails (which I don't want to think it will, but how many horror films are successful? Some of the most successful directors can't even make a good horror movie)...they have no one to blame but themselves.

The pure stupidity of the studios execs almost makes me want nothing to do with hollywood. Argh

They picked the most commercial, but least interesting script, and gave it to the least commercial, but most interesting director. That's hollywood baby.

I didn't get to see Thursday's episode. Anybody know if they'll be showing it again this week?

Last Thursday's episode (#304) will be repeated Sunday, April 10th at 12:00pm, 8:00pm and 12:00am (Monday). All times are Eastern.

Thanks Terry. I'm glad they show the repeats in the evening. My cable company has leased access on that channel during the day.

Man....
I never know what to think of Gulager....he's so capricious.
I'm glad he got some of his family in there, and I think he is getting the hang of things more....but I think as a first time director for a hollywood movie...first impressions are EVERYTHING.
So, his short film could have been his first impression some may argue...which landed him the job...but his interview was horrid, which allowed him to be a human doormat.

And of course, these guys are going to say **** for the show "I'm going to fire him!" because then they can save face later on.
If they did fire him without making an effort to keep him (and that was an idle threat I thought), the show would be a mess, and the movie would be a mess....the studio would get pissed, it would create huge setbacks.....its just not a practical move by any means.

Gulager will pull this out because he has good ideas and is essentially a good director, he's just a bumbling fool sometimes, thats all.

That casting director is a fake blonde C.

I don't think it was a good idea for Gulager's dad to be standing at the bar set, huffing fumes while they paint the set.

That Casting Director bugs the **** out of me. Not only did she do precisely the same thing as Gulager was trying to do, and got mocked for, (as previously mentioned), but she's obviously not concerned with what's best for the film.

She's the one that keep's mentioning that Gulager doesn't direct the actors, but she casts someone who, by her own admission, needs good direction to perform the part well.

THis wasn't an actor that the others were luke warm about. She wasn't even on the list, and Gulager flat out said he didn't want her. I'll grant you that the guy doesn't exactly command respect as a director. But you should atleast respect the position, if not the person.

Edit: The writers are bugging me too. I realize this is their big shot, but finish the job with the people who gave you that shot before moving on. It irritated me when they told the producers to go ahead and make whatever small changes were necessary, (since they were busy on their new deal), then they had a hissy fit when they didn't like the changes.

They wanted to pass on the responsibility, but keep the control. I guess they'll go far in LaLa Land.

My friend just sent me the first four shows. I watched the first two.

I agree about the casting director. She acts like she's bringing him these big stars. Everyone of them had no screen value. I'm not talking acting talent. I'm talking making money for the studio because we know who they are.

I think the whole project greenlight thing is to sell a show about making a movie. It's not the movie that makes money its the tv show.

Please and the studio saying oh, where not going to put money into this is a joke. They're going to put money into it.

This whole series reminds me of the Marine Corps. You have a Gunny telling you to do things that YOU CANNOT ACCOMPLISH in the time allowed and with the equipment provided, but you do. He tells you to take a hill that is defended by a superior force with superior firepower, and you do. He tells you to do 2000 sit ups, and you do....
Wait a minute, my bad, I've got this backwords. What the studio freaks are TRYING to do is emulate the Corps by provided you with very little production money, crappy scripts, cheesy back office intrigue in HOPES that this will "force" the best picture out of their actors/directors/writers. While it works in the Marines, it inevitably fails in Hollyweird because there is no accountability; just passing the blame or grabbing the glory!

Trying to think should I thank my friend for sending me the first four shows of project greenlight or kill him?

The Maloof's are now co-executive producers of Feast. I've been in Phil's house several times for parties. My friend who sent me the stuff lives down the street in Vegas.

I been trying to get him, myself and Phil to sit down and discuss things. So I need to slap my friend around and get him to get us into a meeting with Phil.

My friend is a talent writer but he's too much of a perfections that he wants everything to be perfect. So by waiting. Myself and him might have lost a great chance.

Have to sit back and figure this out. Gee I wish I lived closer to Vegas. Might just have to fly in.

Oops. I should have watched more of the dvd before I turned it off. Its Phil the nephew. I know Phil Maloof the uncle. But it still doesn't matter the uncle can get us into see Phil the nephew.

Well, the drama on the show keeps going on, with them setting us up for Gulager emotional self-flaggellation whining next week. Casting him as director was good work for the TV show.

What John needs is some real support from the producers. It's not that they needed more money, it's that Gulager needed more training. Why didn't he spend a day (or two) with Wes Craven or someone else in pre-production, a day (or two) getting to see how a real director works. It's about workflow, not creativity. It sounds like John is doing some creative things and some awful things, he just doesn't know how to organize his production. And everyone is whining at him and about him, but none of the Executive Producers provided him with a single day of production experience prior to making him captain of the ship. If you remember, he visited the Wes Craven set when they were NOT shooting. And he went as a tourist, not a student. But now that he is in production, there is no time for that, they just have to keep teh wheel turning and hope they have enough usable footage to make a reasonbly coherent story. Or does it matter anyway?

I am watching season 1 now on DVD. Saw the 12 episodes, going to watch the movie and extras this weekend. Then I will have it available at $30 including USA shipping if anyone PM's me about it.
