Project Greenlight [Ongoing Discussion]

I've watched all the PGLs. I've come to a conclusion that these TV shows are well told stories, they leave us wondering "what's gonna happen next?" but they accomplish this by trashing the little guys, not the well established Hollywood pros, and I'd bet they make plenty of money off the show/advertising to cover expenses & losses. Some stories need good guys & bad guys, do you think the Dimension guys or anyone else but the unsuspecting newbies could wind up being a bad guy? Gulager is a perfect monster for their monster movie on making monster movies. It's too bad they do this.:embarasse

I am just posting to keep this thread active for this week. Anyone see Robert Rodriqez on Bravo Sunday?

I’m in total agreement with anyone who has the opinion that this guy (Gulager) is completely trashing a fantastic opportunity. Even if the film comes off brilliantly his interpersonal skills, complete lack of assertion regarding anything and total inability to articulate even benign thoughts have already burned bridges.

I actually found myself saying out loud “say something….anything” during that train-wreck of a conference call. And he’s obviously ultra-paranoid, his interactions with everyone ultimately set traps for future conflicts (the casting person for instance was totally blindsided in that one meeting simply due to his obvious reservations on sharing any opinion with anyone).

Just another opportunity wasted on someone who can’t see that a door has just flown wide open for them.

That’s my long version, the short version is that I think he’s an ingrate punk  . Quirkiness definitely walks closely with artistry just as brilliance borderlines complete insanity, but damn that dude is just annoying.

MattC my son was telling me he saw where he was going to be on that Bravo movie discussion show on Sunday morning(I forget the name of it) we missed it. I was hoping someone could clue me as to what he had to say.

Well, I retaped PG last night just to check my hearing and I was correct. Gulager clearly states that he and his dad never finished &*&(^*&^ Tulsa or any other feature. From all the comments on the video boards, Bravo may have created an ideal "reality villian" right up there with Ommorosa (Apprentice) and that chick from the first Survivor.

I was also pissed off at that rep from dimensions...that guy is the epitome of why movies suck in todays world. He obviously picked the worst script and thought it was awesome.

It's all about making money instead of art. Sad

a little late to join.. but I bought the 1st season DVD set, and sat down with 4 people, 2 of them not in the industry. We were planning on only watching 1 episode, but where so addicted we watched 12 hours and the movie in one sitting.. if you are new to the industry I would skip film school and watch this show.. you pretty much learn everything you need to make a movie, minus the actual shooting. Good stuff, one of the best DVD's in my collection.

Yeah, I just bought the 1st and 2nd season box sets from Amazon last week. They're packaged with the movie they make each season... and, of course, lots of extras.

I did like you Jarred and watched the entire first season in one day.

TOnight was my first time watching this. I thought it was okay. I agree with those that think this guy is not doing much with an opportunity (so far). I feel for him, but he's got to stop worrying about what people think of him and take control of some of this. Respect is earned and responsibility is taken, not given. As long as he sees himself as "just a guy who won a contest" that's how everyone will treat him. He has the chance of a lifetime here. I respect the fact that he has a darker vision, and wants to stay true to it through casting. But Dimension doesn't seem to be trying to hide the fact that they want to make money. It's a trade: His opportunity, their profit. He needs to stick to his guns, but he is being too myopic about his familia.
Nobody gets everything they want on a film. It just doesn't work that way.

I think you always have to remember that the editing is affecting the perception. I wonder how long they can continue to make Gulager and his wanting to cast his family the main conflict of the show. Three weeks so far, seems a bit contrived especially the dinner with his family and their discussion of whats going on. Clearly someone sees this as a ratings winner.

No doubt about the editing BigMagic. But what they show is all we have to work with. I think in the end he might make a good picture. If he can find a way to communicate.

Thanks Terry, I am guessing that is a link to the DVD set. 1. It does not work. 2. I don't want to buy it, just watch it once.

and the "he's gonna get fired now" angle

imdb shows us the truth. The project is in post.

On the last episode he did as his friends told the producers said he would at the announcement party: Throw a fit and get over it (regarding the casting issue).

So knowing the imdb info, that's a good thing concerning his personality I suppose.

I’ve been heavy into the music biz for so long now that it’s just common to have an ‘artist’ blow-up-and-recover. If you can handle the recovery then you just accept it as ‘normal’ for their behavior i.e. “he’s going hate this but he’ll/she’ll deal”. I guess that goes for any relationship, if you can bear the idiosyncrasies it can work.

Also, pushovers/pacifists are hard for me to get confident about so I like to see someone throw punches if they believe in something regardless of whether or not they get it in the end or it’s seemingly unreasonable. At least there’s a heart there and not some ‘yes guy’ telling me what I want to hear.

I'm officially back in Gulagers corner

Just bought seasons 1 & 2 on eBay. Anyone who wants to buy either one from me in a few weeks let me know.
