project from one pc to another

Hi!

I have worked on a project on one PC, but I have to move to my PC at home. I use Canopus Raptor card both place. I used a travelling winchester to take all the data. But at home the dv file was some hor or other corrupted (as PP said) and displayed only black picture. The sound was all right.

I tried again to take all data by other way. But the same happened.

Does someone know why?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

What version of Premiere are you using?

Have you tried to export a trimmed project? An important thing to remember is that the drive letter assigned to the external drive has to be the same on both machines for the literal references to be maintained. If the exporting machine assigns the drive as Y: (as an example) then the new machine needs to also have the drive assigned as Y: this needs to be done BEFORE you attempt to open the trimmed project.

But what if I just load the files into the new machine, not keeping them on travell winchester?

You can "...just load the files into the new machine..." but if you want to reuse the project file, then the files will have to be in the same location (directory structure wise) as the machine that they came from. As an example:

[Old machine]

z:\film_project\SOMEFILENAME.avi

If you move SOMEFILENAME.avi to the new machine but put it into a different location, like:

[New machine]

c:\my documents\film\SOMEFILENAME.avi

The project file will not find the .avi and will have to be relinked. It is easier to just create the same file structure on the new location. If the files are not organized well (spread in multiple locations) then exporting a trimmed project is the way to go as it will collect all the assets and build a new flat file structure project.

Hi! Thank you!

I made the structure the same way as in old PC. But I cannot even play a dv file separately, but music files and still pictures are ok.

Hi,
Can you successfully view the DV files using another program such as Window Media Player? I suspect you have a codec problem.

I move entire projects from one disk to another all time with no problem. I also move projects to an external drive and switch the drive between my desktop and laptop. So what your trying to do should work.

I remember using Canopus Storm, and found that it used a proprietarry codec that worked on Canopus systems only. As far as why it won't work with Premier, it used to, but i believe that Canopus has phased out all other NLEs over the past few years. This means you are stuck using a Canopus NLE, or recapturing the footage.

I gave up on Canopus after the firewire port fried the second time. I didn't think Canopus would fix it free twice. Now I'm doing HDV with just PP2, and having no problems yet.

Unfortunately I could not solve this problem. Any Canopus dv file I took to new pc, cannot be played normally. "file is corrupted" - this is the message.

Can oneone help?

Presumably, the "...Canopus dv file..." uses a unique codec. You would need to either install this codec on the new machine, or on the source machine, convert the files to standard .avi.

Just to test things you could create a new time line, put a counting leader or some other self generated clip in the time line and then export an .avi 'movie' to test on the new machine. This should work without any problems. If it doesn't then the problem would be other than the codec.

using the trimmed project feature is a fantastic option. it saves so much work... actually, when i've got everything cut to where i want it and i need to start a second project at the same time, i trim the project down, delete the original dv source files... and begin capturing footage for my second project!

its awesome!

When I sold My Canopus Rex RTPro I had a lot of SD projects and elements that required the Canopus codec to play. You can download a free player version of the codec from the Canopus support pages that enables you to use the Canopus files as a source but not record with that codec.
