Project asking for never used files?

An unusual thing appears to be happening with a final cut project and I would really appreciate any suggestions as to how or why. An editor sent me a copy of his Final Cut Pro project file for a film he’s been working on for us. However, this is the first time we’ve used this editor and he uses external LaCey drives for the media.

Anyway, he cleared out ‘unused media’ before sending it to us, but a really weird thing is happening. When we try and open it up, Final Cut is asking for the location of hundreds of off-line files for sound effects, clips etc which were never used in the project and gives the original location as being one of his Lacey drives.

Needless to say, it’s somewhat perplexing. He’s using 4.5 and were using 5.0 so there shouldn’t be a problem in that regard. He’s confirmed he only searched the clips on one of his LaCey drives when assembling the project, so does anyone know why a FCP project file with ‘unused media’ cleared would be asking for so much never-used media?

so you dont need the media? and if you just relink what you do need/have and cancel the other stuff you are fine? then dont worry about it! i've found some problems going between 4.5 to 5...

I fully agree, provided I knew which hundred clips out of about eight hundred were actually the ones needed in the project. I suppose it's also to do with my feeling uncomfortable with mysteries - why would a project be asking for media that was never used, especially after 'remove unused media'?

Theoretically, you could just set them all off and then look at the bin and reconnect the ones there. I think if you select them from the timeline you can reconnect them, as well... that way you'll know its only the ones from the actual timeline.

This is all assuming that you didn't already just open it and see if just the ones you need automatically reconnect. Sometimes missing/unused media may be offline and the used files may still be online... it's not necessarily all or nothing is basically what I'm saying.

Then that's what I'll have to do - though there are about 100 main clips and over 300 more media files that will have to be reconnected in this first project. It's a shame but, even when I point FCP to the drive that contains all the files in just the one folder, it still insists I reconnect them one at a time and it's very slow. Plus this is only part one of nine project parts so I'll have thousands of the damn things to reconnect. I'm still completely amazed it won't reconnect the media automatically. Thanks for the suggestions guys, but it looks like I've got my work cut out for me.
