Programmers - seeking USB device programming advice/help

Hi there everyone!

My apologies in advance for a post that's got nothing to do with filming! Please bare with me while I try to explain my dilemma =)

I've made a large format digital still camera using a Canon LiDE200 scanner as the backend. I've had to make modifications to the scanner (warranty void - no problem!) but it still works, and I've managed to take some 'photos' with it. For interest's sake, I use a Symmar-S 300mm large format lens. I built the frame and bellows myself.

Now, when I want to use a resolution higher than 600DPi, the Canon software and Photoshop (and any other software) wants to load the scanner driver. And here lies the problem. When it loads the driver, it goes through some test feature (I suspect it has something to do with white balancing) and returns an error that the scanner lock is on. In my case the lock is not on. (Canon use the lock error as a general error somethimes). I think it's a white balancing feature because the glass that was removed, also had a white strip on it.

So here is what I was hoping to crack. I would like the device to work with resolutions above 600DPI (hardware can go up to 4800DPI) without having the scanner doing this startup/white balancing test.

1. How difficult is it to make your own "simple" device driver?
2. Can it be made to control whether the LED lamp light comes on/off?
3. Could I add my own manual white balancing feature?

Questions 2+3 aren't neccessary, but would be good if possible. I've tried contacting Canon but they said they can't release the programming bits and pieces to me. No suprise there. Happy to provide further details if neccessary via here or PM/email. I just want to access the higher resolutions at this stage. I have Snoopypro to get USB packet data, aparently that could help? Any advice/help is much appreciated.

WP.
