Professional Web Design Skills - What software?

I want to start designing my own websites for films. I know a bit about HTML, but nothing much about the more advanced web design applications. I'd rather learn something that is professionally used, so it's a transferable skill for me too. What programs are web designers specializing in? I've heard of Dreamweaver, but I'm not even sure if that's what it's called anymore--I think Adobe bought up a bunch of companies and changed the names of the programs.

Okay, that's for CSS and HTML experts, I realize. I will try tackling all that too. But I see a lot of other software suites being used. Like Flash and Dreamweaver. Even the job postings ask for specialization in various programs. They don't say Word Pad.

Flash, Dreamweaver, and InDesign are the top apps to use, but getting sucked into depending on the app will cause you headaches too. Dreamweaver likes to add tags that cause the web page to act funky in some browsers. Knowing the way from the code up helps. But those 3 programs will take you far if you learn the basics. You can go to webmaster-talk.com for expert advice in the field.

I am very much a amateur where web is concerned but I will say I started out in Microsoft Frontpage and found that was crap. Then I spent some time learning HTML/CSS and started coding in notepad. I use Dreamweaver now for some stuff, but being able to do stuff all by hand I can see is a very valuable skill to have. Now I prefer to code by hand (even though I am doing relitively simple stuff)

Word pad. All the best designers use it.

Word Pad? ha!

I prefer Notepad (notepad++ is even better and has built in FTP with a million other plugins)

@Original Poster:

Learn some web programming (PHP,Python,Ruby on Rails,ASP.NET), because at some stage your needs will expand and static pages don't do much..

I use coda. It is great and gives code hints like dreamweaver but more reliable without changing the prefs. Dreamweaver is great also if you know what prefs to change and how to set everything up. Like Anhear said "learn php, MySQL, Java, ect. Flash is also good to know(learn action scripting. Not just timeline editing. You'll have so much more control)
