I was wondering how do I go about getting rights to a company name, since I'm just starting out and I want to make shorts where can I go get my Company name or check if it's available. And would it be production company, firm I dont know the whole procedure and what about a web domain?

Every state has unique rules. Here in California, you start by visiting the Secretary of States webpage (for an LLC or corporation). They have a great tool that let's you search for all registered companies. If name is not taken, that's a good start.

You also can get a DBA (doing business as) or fictious business name - in Los Angeles, this occurs within the county.

As for searching nationally, do a web search as a start. Chances are the name will pop up on a website and you'll know it's taken.

As for domain names -check out godaddy .

hope it helps. another aspect to consider - and something I'm not too familiar with- is trademark/branding. My friend started a new co, and they went through the whole trademark process with an attorney . The attorney made them change the name of their brand (company) a couple of times so that is could be trademarked and unique enough to be protected in court.

I can't emphasize enough how great it is to hire an attorney to take care of business stuff. I mean, you should definitely know your way around your own business, but having a professional do the intricate tasks makes life so much more fun - and allows you to focus on other things.
