Production Company Market

I just wanted to know what other people are charging or what they think should be charged for different services in a production company. So if you could list a price you think is good and include circumstances for price change (i.e. at a wedding they want only the cermony filmed and not the reception)

BTW I will be using an XL2, FINAL CUT PRO 5, decent sound gear, and a lighting kit, I also will be able to make the DVD's

Pricing for:

Commercial (how much for longer commercails i.e. 3min)

Training video

Editing job (by the hr or one payment)

Wedding video

Short film (I know this is very broad but what should a producer pay me to use my equipment and time)

Feature film

Music Video

Thanks for giving me some ideas and figures, include other video projects you think i might come across and what a good price for them is. This is to help me layout a business proposal i can set up

I think you will find there is quite a range of what people charge and a lot of it comes down to the following:

1. What market/region are you in?
2. Who are your competitors? What are they charging?
3. How confident are you in your skills?
4. What does your portfolio look like?
5. How much gear do you own, how much do you have to rent?
6. Will you be a 1 man band or be hiring crews to work with you?

All of these things factor in to what you will charge. Just to give you an example, we met with a Jewelry company that wanted to do a commercial. They said they had previously used a cable company to shoot their ads and they charged them $750. We can't do it for that amount, there's just no way. It's not worth it to us. We have some formulas that help us budget each project based on the specific requirements for that job.

If you are looking to build up a portfolio, you can get away with charging less but always try to get a reasonable amount so that you can stay in business.

How much will you charge me to build my dream house? Just give me a price first then I will tell you everything I want to include in the floor plans.

But seriously, I would first find a comfortable hourly rate first. $100/hour is what I charge for shooting or editing for example. Each project is different and some people can shoot/edit quicker than others so there are lots of variables out there to consider.

The client is in control of how much they can spend so ask them first what their budget is then apply your hourly rate to that. For example, I could do that cable commercial for $750 no problem. At my $100/hour rate, I have 7.5 hours to complete it. Not much time to shoot and edit so it would be a very basic commercial. If the client wants more then charge them more.

I think in the early stages Ill charge a lil less. I figured about $75-100/hr for shooting depending on what type of shooting (like wedding versus commercial that needs lighting setups) and $25-60/hr for editing depending on the type on editing. and about $5 a dvd after the first one.

Also when im contacting other production comapnies would you recommend I pretend to be a customer. or should i tell them im starting a production comapny in there area?

Well, I personally would not give information to someone who I thought would be directely competing with me. Maybe the Producers in your area are more alteristic than I am, but I doubt it.
