My girlfriend had a change of idea lately, switching out of the arts and going into something like producing maybe.

but she and i are both clueless as to what one would need to do in university to get good grounds on started producing.

What program would be most recommended to become a producer?

those are books, which by itself is probably alot better than someone just giving me a name of a program, but she really is looking for what area to go into for university. Shes currently in design and wants to get far far away from it, so she though of business ( producing just as an idea )

but would it be business?

Like Blaine said, business and management with a minor in production to understand the process and components.

In hollywood most producers are business professionals. They are there to make the studios and themselves money. There is no real school, that I am aware of, you can attend that specializes in producing. I would say business management classes, bone up on your communication skills, and learn how to sale ice to an eskimo and you and your girl will be on the way to be great producers.

Hello there PaPa,

I'm currently going to be graduating from my liberal arts college in may, and I am currently working at a post-production branding agency training to become a producer. There are many different types of 'producers' out there, and that needs to be decided first.

1)There are the producers who go out and try and find funding for small independent projects
2) There a producers for studios who are more business oriented where accounting is more important
3) There a producers for small independent production/advertising firms, that pitched ideas to clients and work as middle men inbetween the creatives and clients, and work out budgeting and such

I'm currently training to be #3, and hopefully in 6 months will be a full time producer.

As far as the school thing goes, I'm graduating with a double major in Communications & Media and Film Studies.

I've been told me studies of communication and media are going to be extremely important to my job, also with my knowledge in post-production is very important.

I would say Communications and Business are the two most important paths to the beginning of becoming a producer. Your knowlege must be wide and vast in all fields as you are going to be the voice for either your company or your self.

Goodluck!

Before you have her do any of that really research being a producer. Talk to as many working producers, if possible different kinds of producers as well, as you can. Find out the pluses and minuses, potential compensation, hazards of the profession, competition for the same work, etc. Always better to get an insider's view before making major comitments to a field.

This has to be the best choice I think in my opinion, because as a producer you don't donly have to know business, but you have to be knowledge some way or another about movies/films... so this is where the production comes in.

I'v always though being a producer is real fun, lot's of hardwork you also gotta be a slick talker!
