Problems with Premiere CS3

When I try and import a previously captured video, I convert it to .avi so that CS3 can accept it and when it's imported, it's all discolored with some interlacing added in with it. What's going on?

What's the format of the original clip and what do you use to convert it to an avi? At first blush it appears that your converting software might be the culprit here.
