Problems with ME66 and FMX 20

I recently purchased the Azeden FMX 20 field mixer, and I'm using it to run audio into my DVX100a. I'm running my sennheiser ME66 with K6 Power into the Field mixer, and then running that into my XLR on my DVX. But for some reason the audio seems way to Hot, the levels look fine on my DVX, but when I play it back the audio peeks and is too harsh. The reason i'm using the FMX 20 field mixer is so i can hear my audio nice and clean, instead of hearing that nasty echo through the headphone jack on the DVX.

Anyone have any suggestions, or experienced this?

thanks,
Rob

Hey man... Sounds like you might be running line level out of the mixer, into MIC level on the DVX. Set the DVX to line level. Basically, if thats whats wrong, the signal will sound correct on the mixer, and then messed on the camera because the clean signal is way to hot for mic level on cam, but youre just gaining the distorted audio down.

thanks for the tip

thanks for the tip

it worked to change the level on the DVX to line input. But now I don't think the audio sounds quite as good from my me66 mic going through the mixer? I think it sounds better to plug the mic directly into the camera, but I just hate that delay in the headphone jack!! I just don't know any other workaround the headphone jack besides the mixer?

interesting... Ive never used the mixer you're using, but personally I really dont like azden gear. The main reason to use a mixer is actually to "outsource" the preamps to a device with better pre's than the DVX, which most cams should have.

Have you checked that your gain structure is correct and that you arent throttling the mics gain somewhere and making it hissy? What about the sound do you dislike?

Unfortunately, a mixer is the only way to avoid this problem, but heres also a warning: if you are monitoring from the input side of the mixer, you wont be able to hear whats being recorded to tape, only whats coming in. Distortion could still be happening on tape. If the Azden has a return section, use that to monitor audio coming BACK from the DVX, in the form of the RCA line outs.

Let me know what you dislike about the sound...

I was listening last night, and the audio does sound really close, it just seems that it may sound a little fuller and deeper when run directly into the camera using the MiC input instead of the Line input that I have to use with the mixer? But maybe it's just me, there's no hiss, or anything like that. I might need to just make it a little hotter through the mixer.

Do you think running it through the Line, instead of mic input on the DVX should make any real difference in the sound?

Thanks for the info, it's sweet you are in South Africa, I'm here in Kansas City, just a few thousand miles away!
