Problems with filters

Hi all! Happy Xmas!

I wanted to know if anyone has found these problems with filters. I have a Chrosziel Matte Box and I also bought a graduated ND, a polarizer and a Black Promist, all made by Tiffen. The first thing I noticed was that when using the Blck Promist in Wide Angle I could see so clearly the "grain" of the filter :-( If I want to use this filter I have to pull the zoom in order to blur the grain and achieve the effect...

The other problem I have is that when pointing at the sun with the mattebox and filters in it I can see very clear on the monitor the objetive of the camera reflected on the filter.

I still have to do some tests removing the UV screw filter I put to the camera. If it helps anyone I have to say that if you use this kind of Uv filter screwed in you will get round squares in Wide Angle when editing on your computer. You know what I mean, don't you?

Thanks!

Re: Problems with filters

Hmm, I'd try adding an ND filter and opening the iris up to shallow the Depth of Field. If you're open wide, I'm sure it'd be shallow enough to take care of the patterning on the filter...

Hey ZAB, Spanish power ;D
I have a Formatt mattebox and i don´t use a 72 mm. screw UV filter when I use the 4 x4 '' filters, because the sun shooting reflected the 72 mm. in the 4 x 4 filter.

Re: Problems with filters

i have the chrosziel with the anamorphic lens and i've never noticed this.

is there a LOT of light around the camera that light me slipping through?

did you try taking something and wrapping it around where the matte box meets the camera to see if the problem goes away??

the only problem i have with my matte box is driving me mad, it keeps slipping forward off of the camera.

to the point where the top half of the matte box is 1/4 of an inch away from the anamorphic.

i've had this problem since day one!

Re: Problems with filters

remove a mirror like reflection in post??

wouldn't that be a huge time suck???

sorry but it bugs me when i hear "fix it in post" when it could be easily? fixed before hand.

- I haven't needed to use a black promist filter,  I prefer to do that effect on post.

- To fix your second problem,  you may need to have a flag  on the matt box, or a cutter on a stand to stop the reflection, removing the UV filter will help.

Re: Problems with filters

ok understood.

i thought you meant go ahead with the mirrored mess and fix that in post!

you wouldn't believe some of the crap i have heard people i've worked with lately say "fix it in post" to things we could fix on set pretty easily.

i use the pro mist, i have 1/4, 1/2 and 1 black pro mist, i love the effect.

Re: Problems with filters

Don't you notice the grain of the black pro mist in wide angle mode? I think it shouldn't happen...

The mattebox fits really ok. Have you tried using the allen key that came with the mattebox? You can loose one of the in screws in order to make the mattebox fit with the camera.
There are two screws on the plate of the mattebox. One lets you move from right to left and the other up and down.
Hope it helps.

Re: Problems with filters

Get the filter as close to the element as possible.(Touching almost).
Blacken out (matte paint) the white lettering on the front of the lens.

I agree that many (most) filters can be applied in post (eg promist looks). Not worth the risk of losing a shot due to dust, reflection etc all as a function of the extreme DOF produced by the small CCD chip. Some filters can not be applied in post eg Polariser and Grad (for sky control) but I can not think of any others. (Maybe a star filter ?) :-/

Yes... it is nice to manipulate the light "organically" with actual filteration but this DV world requires a paradigm shift.
