Problems with Cross Dissolve

I've been adding cross dissolves all afternoon and now with just one transition it has added a cross dissolve that is one frame long and I can't get it to lengthen. What am I doing wrong with this one?

You don't have enough handles on one end, or both ends of your media. Remember, you need MORE footage at the end of the A clip and head of the B clip for the dissolve to work. Otherwise, if you have reached the end of your footage, what is FCP going to use to make that dissolve? It needs picture!

If you have a 1 second dissolve, for example, then clip A needs a 1 second handle at the tail, and clip B needs 1 second of a handle at the top.

The only way to fix this is to delete your desolve, and trim your cut.

Look up handles and dissolve in the manual if you are still confused, they cover it clearly.

If one of your clips simply doesn't have enough content to make a dissolve with the cross fade transition, you can do a manual dissolve by placing the clip that does have enough content over the other clip and keyframing the opacity to fade in over the clip below. You won't have as much flexibility with the timing, but at least you can get a disolve in there where the stock transition won't let you do it. Just make sure your incoming clip is at full opacity before the outgoing clip runs out, or you'll have a weird little glitch in your crossfade.

If that doesn't work for you, you may need to recapture the clip and allow more of a handle on it, provided that there is enough of that clip to allow a handle.
