I think what most people object to with the ME66 is that it is extremely over-priced for the quality you get. And, unfortunately, most unscrupulous or unknowing dealers sell it to unsuspecting folks that just bought a camera and are looking for a good all-purpose mic.
Of course there are worse mics than the ME66. But, for the price of a new ME66 you can pick up a used 416 or a new 4073a and get much better sound. Sound quality wise, the ME66 is roughly equivalent to the AT897, but the 897 is less than half the price of the ME66.
