after shooting in 24p advanced, then capturing in FCP is ok, the problem i have is when i drop the clip on my timeline. The clip gets really soft and choppy. What am i doing wrong

Is the timeline 23.98?

Note that FCP sometiems displays subquality for realtime playback. Try outputing through firewire to a monitor to check the quality or export a section as QT and set to high quality,

the problem is, your 24pA clips are actually 29.97fps, and you're cramming them into a 23.98 timeline. this is not your fault. even though there is an option to "remove advance pulldown" in final cut pro 5.1, it does not work properly. apple lied to everyone. as a result, you must open your clips in cinema tools and "reverse telecine" the clips so that the extra frames are removed and the 29.97 clips are now set to 23.98. once you do that (I suggest using batch settings for multiple clip situations), and drop them into your final cut pro browser, then you will have 23.98fps clips and a 23.98fps timeline. perfectly consistent, the way it should have been when you checked the "remove advanced pulldown" box. once you do this, your footage won't be craggy anymore.

i just went through this. perhaps it sounds complicated, but it isn't. and it's liberating once you do it...

I shoot 24pA and use FCP's "advanced pulldown removal" all the time without problems. Plays back in the FCP monitor and my external monitor just fine.

Open a new project and use the "easy setup" option from the final cut pro menu. Select "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal". Create a new sequence. Double check that the new sequence is set to 23.98. Delete the default sequence that FCP created when you opened the new project (it will most likely be 29.97). Using the easy set up option sets everything else up for you. You will be ready to capture your 24pA footage. Remember this is for 24pA and not 24p. Your footage should look fine when played back and should not need to be rendered. As long as you shot 24pA and you took the above steps, there should be no problems.

Give this Ken Stone page a good read also:

Yes, you need to shoot 24pA. Also, you can use the DVCPRO-HD Frame Rate Converter to conform you footage after you've ingested it.

As to the pulldown in the P2 Import window not working, I've yet to see it not work properly.

Hello.

I ran into a similar problem.
Shot 24pa, set seq preset to DV NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 and Capture preset to NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal.

Anyway, for whatever wacky reason SOMETIMES these settings will give me captured media with a "vid rate" of 23.98 and a field dominance of none and sometimes it will give me files with a "vid rate" of 29.97 and a field dominance of lower (even). Even if I capture the EXACT same piece of footage twice in a row. The sequence is always at 23.98, field domiance none. Anyway, the media that's at the 23.98 rate drops into the timeline quite nicely, the other media has to render.

First I just want to confirm what is the desired "vid rate" I believe it's 23.98, even though the FPS in the capture preset editor must be set to 29.97, as NoahK explained in the FCP stikcy. Is that correct? If I at leat know that, I know which of my media I need to redigitize.

Secondly, any ideas on why it sometimes does it one one rate, sometimes on another, though I've not changed preferences? I'm going to try to trash my prefs in case they became currupted, as explained by: http://www.lafcpug.org/Tutorials/basic_trash_prefs5.html

Any other ideas?

thanks!
