Problems transferring with FAT32 External...

So I didnt really know where to post this question, but I figured it could quickly get answered in here.
One of my external drives I am using has FAT32 and its starting to bug me. I have a few shots that are a little larger than 4 gigs and every time I try to transfer them to that external as back up it doesnt work and cancels my transfer. I know that the File Allocation Table is what is limiting this, but is there any way around it?
I would like to get those shots onto this hard drive so they can be backed up!

Thanks in advance for any help.

FCP doesn't read/write to FAT drives well, it's a HUGE mistake to use anything besides a Mac Extended w/Journaling formatted drive. FCP's specs require it. FAT32 won't let you write files larger than 4Gigs. The ONLY way to get around this is to reformat the drive to the Mac native format, period.

Thanks.

This is weird though, because I could have sworn I formatted it to MAC Extended w/ Journaling. I am pretty sure I couldnt even write to it until I did that, but maybe that was my other external.

Man I REALLY messed up if I didnt do that. Looks like I will just reformat it if thats all it is.

Thanks again!

OK, conflicting statements. You started off talking about a FAT formatted drive, now you say it's not, I'm confused as to what the real problem is. Do you mean the FAT drive is a "backup" drive? Not going to work at all, cause it's going to slice up large files into smaller ones, and you're Mac OS will get really angry with you, and poot all over your video files.

Yup- some drive makers' gear come pre-formatted as FAT32. Which will work on Macs but imposes a file size limit- not good. Always confirm disk formats before using new drives. It takes two seconds in Drive Utility.
