Problems rendering please help!

Ok so we finished our movie for Horrorfest, but this is the first time we've ever filmed with the DVX and even the first time we've ever edited with Vegas, so needless to say this is all a wonderful learning experience.

We followed the "24p basics" thread and everything seems fine, the only trouble I have now is getting the file rendered so that everyone can actually watch the damn thing ;)

So we rendered as an MPEG-2 and select DVD Architecht 24p Widescreen for the templates, then I go to Custom and click on the audio and render.

When we watched it the first time it dropped frames but didn't skip. It was just amazingly awkward to watch however all the sound and the cut's were on time, it just had dropped frames and was like a flipbook that was missing pages.

So we set one of the options in the Templates section to 24.00 and when we rendered the file this second time, amazingly it was perfect and exactly what we wanted.

Now we needed to burn it to a DVD to give to our composer so that he could make the soundtrack, this is where the problem set in.

The file didn't really want to be transfered to DVD and when played was back to it's old tricks of skippyness. What was even more odd was that the file had no properties other than being a media file.

Really all I need to know is what you guy's do when your 24p widesceeen project is finally finished and you want to give it out to people for viewing (Or in this case, submit it to Horrorfest so it can even be watched.)

I'd hate to of wasted all this time filming a movie for this and then be unable to submit it, so can anyone please help us out with this so that we can enter Horrorfest?

(Whoops! Look's like my partner in crime posted before me! Please disregard/delete this if it's asking the same questions, thanks)

Don't change anything in the templates. The templates are ideal. That's why they're there.

You should never mess with any settings in the templates unless you know what you're doing.

Don't change the frame rate.

Don't include audio on the render. Render a separate AC-3 or WAV file for DVD. Give it the same file name and save it in the same folder, and DVDA will automatically mate it with the video.

If you make any changes the template, DVDA will re-render the file. And re-rendering a file with as much compression as MPEG-2 is going to be problematic at best, which is what you're seeing.

if you render using the DVDa 24p template ( renders file 23.976) - it will not play smooth on your computer ( skips - seems to get stuck on the pull down flags )
the mpeg 2 file will play smooth on a DVD player ( it will add pull down SD DVD) if you have a HDTV that can play 24p then the HDTV will remove the pull down that your DVD player just added and you get to view at 24p ( 23.976)

a mpeg rendered in Vegas at true 24fps will not render ( prepare) in DVDa ...

Thanks guys :)

Oh ok so the MPEG file is for DVD uses and not viewing on the computer! I see. To forego making another thread, Barry mentioned that the format for the contest is a H.264 400line version of the movie.

I have no idea what that means. Does that mean just rendering a .mov file? And if so when we did render a .mov file we also got that dropped frames problem. I know you said not to touch the templates but then I am not sure what version to render to so that I can enter this.

I'm continuing my posting in this forum in this thread so that we can all benefit.

When I render as a .mov and open it in QuickTime the properties for the file say it is H.264. How do I check if it is 400line? Is that the same as 400 pixels?

I read the "400line" comment and it was confusing.... but I think he meant " 4 Online" as in "for online" as in for web viewing as opposed to a version to be burned on a DVD.

anybody else concur?

OMG. I'm an idiot. I love embarrassing myself publicly (at least I didn't misspell publicly as pubicly) Yes, that is what he meant.

And I rendered as QT 6 in Vegas, but when I used my QT PRO 7 to view the file, the properties stated that it was H.264.

David, I realize this post of yours was from a while back, however, I have a questions regarding how you render.

In rendering to MPEG2, do you always render your audio separately?

Also, do you do anything in particular to your visual workflow to increase render performance? For example, close the preview screen, or minimize the tracks, close the project media screen, etc. to lessen the load on the render? Does that make sense?

Thanks.
