Problems exporting from Premiere as DV PAL Widescreen

Hi!

I have an urgent problem with exporting from premiere. When I export an ad that will run on local TV with the specifications given by the TV station I end up with getting two tiny pillar boxes on each side. Not big at all but enough to probably get the file rejected by them. I have some info about it on Adobes homepage but I don't fully understand how to make the changes or why this happens. The sequence was originally created as an square pixels 1080p project (the client came up with the brilliant idea to air it on TV all of a sudden). Could anyone guide me step by step how to make the necessary changes in order to remove the pillar boxes on each side?

In my opinion, since televisions crop out a big part of the image from all sides this will get cropped away, maybe that is the solution to just leave it as it is since it will get cropped anyway?

Export settings are following:

720x576
D1/DV1 PAL Widescreen 16:9 1.4587
Codec Uncompressed YUV 8 bit 4.2.2
Format: Quicktime/MOV

If you have questions about a particular TV station's deliverables or QC, you need to speak to an engineer at the TV station.

I too noticed this just a few days ago, and none of the small tweaks in the box solved it, but changing the codec type did. I am not sure if it was luck or coincidence, but the previous project I had rendered was going to DVD in 720x 576 and had been using an h.264 codec. Swapping to something else to experiment when I got those black bands, I found a couple of less good setups, but going back to another preset the bands vanished. I'm not at work at the moment so can't say which one cured it. If nobody has used that machine since, I'll see if I can check the last used setup and report back.

I have found the same thing as you that a different codec solves it. My problem is that I have to deliver it in the above mentioned format and codec since that's the only format that the TV station is accepting. I have found a less good solution but it works:

Check that all the text and graphics are in the safe zone, and add a couple of millimeters extra so that you have some playroom. Export the file as 1080p with highest possible bitrate and render options. Create a new sequence with DV PAL (Or ntsc) widescreen. Import the HD file, and then simply scale the clip so it fills out the black borders on the side, this will cause all the graphics and text to move out a bit closer to the safezone line but since I gave it a couple of extra millimeters this is not a problem :).

Not the best solution but it saved my butt!

I just double checked and the MPEG2-DVD preset is the troublesome one, set to PAL DV Wide - which outputs the audio and video separately as .wav and .m2v files. I like this because to my eyes, it's the nicest. Not sure why it misbehaves like this.

In the Export Settings dialog, click over to the Output tab on the top left. Use the drop down box to choose Scale to Fill.

Was this the specs they asked for? I am surprised if so.
