Problems exporting as Quicktime

Wish I were banned.
I don't have Quicktime Pro, so I can't export as H.264, but when I do export through Quicktime, the file won't play back in VLC (which is what I use to watch things). Downlodaed Quicktime files work fine in VLC, but not the ones that I've created. When I render, I just set to project settings, change the file type to .mov, and continue. Is there a better option for me to use compression-wise?

Also, recently I've been exporting as .avi because that renders fastest for some reason. I'm looking for something so I can convert .avi into a smaller file while retaining quality. Is Quicktime Pro worth the money so that I can use the H.264 codec?

When you render, it's under "Save as type."

If you're rendering an .avi and just changing the extension to .mov, you're not actually rendering a Quicktime file.

Quicktime isn't a codec by itself. It's a file format. When you render as Quicktime, you have the choice of many codecs. It's under "Video Format" when you go into the custom render settings.
