Problems adding dissolves with 23.98 edit.

So i have fcp 5. I capture at ntsc 48, and then in pull down menu below i selected "remove adavanced pulldown." So i got my footage in there and put it on a 23.98 timeline. the footage looks beautiful, no strobing nothing. Only problem is, i can't throw in a dissolve between two clips (sometimes it doesn't let me put it there at all, and sometimes it lets me put it only on one clip), or any transition such as a fade in fade out that will go on both the timeline and the clip.

Has anybody had this problem before and is there some setting that i need to change?

Also, this was just for the testshoot, so i was wondering, is editing on a 23.98 timeline worth it. Will i run into lots more problems, like for instance trying to print to video? etc.

Thanks for you help.

I use FCP5. I capture 24pa by selecting DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal and edit on a 23.98 timeline also.

I've never had the problem with Dissolves. The only thing I know is... Do you have room at the end and beginning of your clips to do a dissolve the way your describing?

You have to bring your clips into the timeline with room away from the end of a captured clip and away from the beginning of the next clip to do a dissolve between clips.

When you say it even happens on " any transition such as a fade in, fade out, that will go on both the timeline and the clip, " that points to this problem.

(I know all this can be said better... sorry.... I'm trying.)

Dissovles between clips.... try this....
Grab the END of the 1st clip and shorten it... grab the BEGINNING of the 2nd clip and shorten it. Slide the 2nd clip to the end of the 1st clip.... add your dissolve.

Putting a fade out on a clip and the time line doesn't work... shorten the end of the clip. It will work.

If this doesn't work.... I don't understand the problem.

I really have never had a problem using 24pa. Mixing frame rates, slow motion, speeding things up..... takes planning.... correct shutter speed and frame rates... (over and under cranking the camera.) It's just great. It's worth it.... when I do have a problem.... I come here for help.

I hope I've helped you. Best of luck.

Put the clips on different layers with overlapping footage. Now you should be able to set a dissolve.

Remove pulldown on capture is easier and one less step to deal with for 24pa footage.

Check the Help menu. Do a search there or check the manual to get up to speed on the basics.

sorry, guys, i've been out of town for the weekend. I'll work on this when i get home, but i thought i had plenty of space on the clips, perhaps not. Thanks.
