Problem.

Well I finally got my editing computer running like 2 weeks ago, and I just finally borrowed a digital Hi-8 to dump all the footage I wanted to edit onto my computer. So I'm capturing and then Premiere starts to drop frames and then when I go to watch the footage in Premiere it's all choppy.

My editing computer:
P4 3.0 GhzE
Asus P4V8X-MX s478 mATX AGP Motherboard
OCZ 1GB 400MHz RAM
200 GB Sata
StarTech PCI1394-2 2 Port IEEE-1394 PCI
Asus V9400-X MX4000 128MB AGP

So I think it's my computer or something, because I haven't ran into this problem before when I edited at my old school.

So thanks for your help. It's really appreciated.

Later.

Well I'm just capturing at whatever the presets are. Sorry, I'm pretty new to Premiere. I just know the basics.

No, I haven't defragged my hard drive and yes, I am capturing to the same drive I'm booting from.

Is that bad?

Yep...thats bad. (Check the manual about scratch disks etc and the Adobe site about system specs and compatibility). I will be sure your issues lie here.

but... what Preset are you using and does it match the footage you shot and the intended output?

Well the presets are just whatever are what set when you install Premiere.

I think it's 720 by 540, with 29 fps with drop frame. I'm not truely sure on the resolution.

But I was using Premiere at my school and the editing computer was caputring on the boot drive. So I don't know.

*Edit*

I have a spare IDE 40 Gb hard drive. So if I set that up, and run that with Premiere, and have Premiere aimed at the SATA for storage. Would that work?

It's still weird that you're dropping frames with those system specs.
I've gone right to the boot drive before with no trouble, plus you're using SATA.
Sorry this comment isn't that helpful, haha, but I wonder if there are other problems going on here too...

Yes using the system disk can be done, but it is a bad idea for many reasons. Probably one of the biggest is that anytime Windows does a system call for any reason it will interupt your playback performance. If your editing away and you recieve an email it will effect your performance. If you capture to a seperate drive, operating system stuff won't effect I/O.

Also how full is your system disk? You may notice reduced performance if its over 60% full.

You can check out what PPro thinks you have in the way of disk space in the Edit-->Preferences tab. Regarding your resolution go into Project-->Project Setting and scroll through the different option to see what you have. If all your editing is standard definition you can easily edit with a single external Firewire or SATA drive.

Well I'm not editing HD. That's for sure. I'm just going to be editing soon with an XL2. So I need my ediiting computer running.

As for my system disk is about 5-15% full. It's not on the internet, so email alerts and such wouldn't matter.

The only thing I have installed are Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Audition, and Far Cry.

But I will try and see what Premiere thinks of my disk space tomorrow.

Thanks, everyone.

Sorry about being a novice with this stuff.

I'd imagine it would probably have to do with the footage, though if not, i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be the drives. I capture into premiere from a small DV deck with DVX footage. I've never had a dropped frame, my specs are very similar to yours, and i'm running two monitors and several external controllers. So i'm not sure if it would be the program, or the system, the only conclusion i can come to is the footage itself.

I'm sure someone who knows more about footage and premiere can answer you, so consider yourself bumped.

Yeah, I checked and it's about 155 Gbs free.

Joshreluctant, I think it might be the camera. It has been beaten around, and has been used a lot since I borrowed it from my old high school since I don't have a digital Hi-8 camera. So I'll try my buddy's Mini-DV camera sometime soon, and I'll see if that works.

Also how much are DV decks?

Thanks again, everyone.

here is my 2 cents...
I'm still baffeled about the dropped frames. BUT the choppiness during playback might mean that you need to upgrade your videocard.
Or change the quality on the playback to low. (right click preview or record window...go to quality or display I can't remember....change to low)
This might help the playback
If I were you I would upgrade the videocard!!!

Hope this helps

Ahh, I never thought of that. What would be a good video camera, that's not very expensive? Sorry, everyone if I'm being a hassle.

I think you mean video card. Right?
Not to get to technical with clock speeds but look for one that is at least $100. I used to have the Radeon 9600XT and that worked.

One other thing. I would recommend 2nd a hard drive for video footage. You can pick up a 250gb for about $95 at newegg.com.

Hope this helps.
Any other questions about hardware just ask.

Ah, yeah sorry about that. I meant a video card. :S

Yeah, I was thinking about getting an ATI card. Never had a problem with them.

I have a spare 40 GB IDE harddrive; so I'll install windows on that, and run Premiere, and such off of the 40 GB.

Would I have to wipe my SATA clean for storage? If I use my 40 GB IDE harddrive for running the programs? I hope not.

Thanks, milvid, I really appreciate the help!

That's is a good start. Just make sure that the smaller drive is reliable. If it is an older hard drive consider a new one. As far as reformating the 200gb SATA, wait and see how things work with the other hard drive. Do some testing with Premiere. If everything runs fine, go ahead and reformat. If you are still having the same problems you can still go back to the SATA as your hard drive if you want.

Here are my specs:

MSI K8N Neo4 motherboard
AMD 4000
2gb dual channel RAM
36gb 10,000rpm system hard drive
250 SATA2 Storage drive
2 - 320gb hard drives at RAID0 media drive
BFG 6600GT video card---I want to upgrade this---

Any other questions??
