Problem with widescreen matte

I am currently editing (FCP HD) a piece shot on two DVX100a's shooting in squeeze mode, and one cannon optura 20 shooting in regular 4:3. When I try to apply the 1:78 widescreen matte to the optura's footage I get an unpleasant distortion on the image just inside the border of the matte. Only some of the clips, about half, seem to experience this problem. Also, the distortion does not occur with 1:66 and 1:70, but 1:78 and up have the proble. Any Ideas?

I just realized that the problem only occurs when the 4:3 footage is placed above another clip. Well, I guess you all just got to watch me work out my own problem. I will cut the sections of the clips on the tracks below it. Still, a bit strange, and a bit public for my taste.
