Problem with the MultiRig

Seems to be a lot of Multirig owners here. I just picked one up and am having an issue with the shoulder mount setup. The shoulder bar or should I say the "inner tube" hinge does not lock in place and therefore the camera begins to slowly tilt backwards and fall into my chest. What would keep it from doing this? How do I keep it horizontal at eye level?

Is this the wrong model for an HVX?

thanks, td

ahhh, the non locking shoulder hinge. it has really pissed me off before while shooting. Yes, i have a multi-rig and have had this problem. I all but solved the issue with a piece of wood that acts like a splint, it is attached to both sides of the non locking hinge with duct tape. Looks god awful but does the job. I am currently looking for a sexier set up that does the job as well. Why the hell didnt they make that hinge lock?! I thought mine was defective when I first discovered this.

Is that for the multirig pro as well?

Mine was a Multirig pro. I returned it next day. Was also unhappy with the grip extensions not locking down solid, I just felt the whole thing was flimsy. I would steer people away from this unit.

what similar product would you suggest

I bought the Varizoom DV Mediarig. It is physically solid and looks more professional (important to me). I liked the PAG orbiter with the panning ability but was steered away by guys with more experience who thought that made is less stable. It's also somewhat bulkier than the VZ.

Do you guys have a pic of how you've got it set up? Something tells me a slight adjustment in the configuration would solve this problem.

i am sure that danny from dvtec can answer all multirig issues and he is usually around. i asked him the same question and realized that i had to tighten the lock with the supplied alan wranch. i did so and was happy. after a while i become wiser and now i work loose again so i can tilt with the shoulder
brace still on my shpolder. when i just want to be steady i tighten it harder.

trust the board.... giving up after 1 day is a bit hasty

i like it for its versatility, you can reconfigure the handles so it almost performs like a fig rig and gives some really smooth footage when walking. It really is several units in one. I have the multirig pro, and would recommend it to anyone. Obviously there are better units out there, but it really is a kind of all in one solution.

After only a single day and you call it names and would steer people from it ? I bet you didn't even read the manual or mailed the manufacturer. You have the right to chose any support you like. but think before you post have respect to other members.

Now to the point, the shoulder side joint is not locking to allow adjusting camera eye level, your shoulder height is not always the best lens height.I tighten it almost all the way but really like to reposition it from time to time to match other heights.

Yes, and over all I really like (love) the MultiRig. its a unique swiss amy knife tool for me.

I stand by my post. Neither the vendor nor yourself or anybody on this site has offerred a solution. There is no "locking" mechanism. Why don't you simply explain rather than bad mouth me?

What thy are saying is, you should tighten it with the allen wrench. If you tighten it enough, it doesn't move. That is the offered solution.

It is a friction locking system that can be tightened in any angle and the position can be adjusted by applying minimal additional pressure. and as said by DaveGlan,
this kind of friction lock allows for adjusting your camera height and general comfort.

sorry for not answering sooner, I was on flights to NAB.

hey danny, or anyone with the unit, i just got mine yesterday and will be using it the rest of the week but have a couple questons:

i notice the hand grips have some play in them when in the locked position. is this normal?

also, the play on the lower spring arm sticks a bit. what kind of lubricant would you recommend to get smooth action (wow, as i type i have to admit that sounds like a loaded question - yowza).

first impressions are that it's a great multi-faceted tool. anxious to put it through the paces.

The paly is normal and is OK you can also tighten the joints with the supplied allen wranch

Make sure both pod locks are loose and / or try working with one locke and the other free.

I am curantly at WEVA Vegas, will check with you in few days.

I used this over a twelve hour period in Indonesia a few months back for a wedding, as they don't use tripods there most of the time. It was a god send and it's versatility turned heads...

I think the point people were making with the 'one day' posts is that you can't expect to take something out of the box, use it and have it work perfectly. Just as you can't take an HVX out of the box and expect it to shoot beautiful footage. It takes practice.

Anyways, just wanted to share my most recent and thorough experience with it, as it was the 'hardest core' time I have put it through and the longest in one session I have used it so far. It was great, and my associates who used it some throughout the day fell in love with it as well.

thanks for the reply danny, perhaps i should be more clear:

the play on the grips is located where the foam grips 'lock' into position (up or down), rather than where or how far they swing away from the baseplate (so i'm talking grips not arms). the brass piece that is thumb activated and fits into slots on the washer at the joint is smaller than the holes in the washer that give it the 'lock' so it seems there's always play, regardless of allen tightening. make sense? i'm wondering if that jog back and forth is normal, or if i have a unit where those locking hole guides aren't quite machined to the correct size (i'd certainly prefer no play there).

also, i can work with the upper spring arm when the bottom one is locked, but the unit will sometimes bottom out due to weight (hvx200 with marshall monitor), so i'd prefer to leave them both free. what's the best lubricant to put more slide on the lower arm and keep it from sticking?

thanks again.
