Problem with .psd in FCP

I have created a photoshop file with several layers that I wanted to important into FCP to make a short animation using keyframes. The final (image #1) can be seen below.

I saved the file as a .psd so I would be able to key the different layers in FCP but when I bring it into FCP it looks it does in image # 2 below.

I googled how to .psd into final cut but didn't see what I was missing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Matthew

***EDIT:

In PS I put a color overlay over the duplicated images and used the shape tool to create the three bars in the top left. It looks like FCP is not accepting those properties. I tried saving as a .tiff and clicked for it to include layers. My image appeared as I wanted it, but I was not able to click on the different layers in FCP***

I'm not really an AE guy, and I have done .psd files in FCP Studio 1, but not since I upgraded to 2.

Have you tried making sure each layer is rasterized? I'd assume FCP isn't much for vectors and masks, which from what I remember is what the shape tool tends to do.
