Problem with Log and Transfer

Recently my P2 card has acted up on log and transfer. The card records fine. It plays in the camera fine and the clips show up inside of the log and transfer screen. The problem is when I send the clips to que. The clips will slowly start to transfer and get about a 1/4 of the way done and then FCP will lock up. I've reformatted the cards, rebooted several times, checked connections. Nothing seems to work. The only thing I can think of is the cards may have been damaged when I powered the camera down while the card transfer light was lit. The firewire connection is a bit loose on the camera but the Firestore I have doesnt have any problems recording from the camera or when I use log and transfer with it. I had used the card a few weeks ago just fine and now there seems to be a ghost in the machine. :undecided Any suggestions?

Well I just tried skipping the Log and Transfer and tried to copy the content folder and last clip file directly to the desktop. It got about half way and locked up. I'm really confused now.

leopard? i had similar issues early on after upgrading to leopard on my macbook. my mac pro didn't do it though....

I had some similar issues. What helped me out was to make sure the P2 cards where write protected, with the switch on the side of the card.

Second was to Not use finder for the card archive, but use a disk image through disk utility.

And then I found the P2 CMS program for mac and now just use that.

Of course I gleaned all this information from this site. Mostly here:

I think it's the FW port on the camera. It get progressively looser the longer you've had the camera and when you're transferring if the connection is faulty in any way it locks up. I couldn't get my footage to import, reset the buses twice by unplugging everything out of my computer and waiting ten minutes, replugging, same problem. I force quit FCP, try to hook up via USB 2.0--no luck of course with that. So I try the FW into log and transfer again but this time I manually hold the 4-pin plug tight into the port on the camera as I drag in a clip, and continue holding it as it--successfully!--captures. Now I'm looking for a locking solution for the port, I think somebody made one that incorporated the headphone jack into the plug as a makeshift lock.

I'd see if any of the clips need to be repaired on the card. We've been running into issues transferring P2 footage onto one MBP that has Snow Leopard on it. For whatever reason, we can't get it to work. Although, now that I think of it, I'm not sure if we've tried to copy over the data via disk utility.

Maybe I'd try pulling off the footage in chunks instead of all of it at one time? Best of luck.

Could you try to copy the P2 card directory structure onto disk first and then re-attempt log-and-transfer from that directory (using Add Custom Path in the L&T Window)?

I see you tried, and then your machine locked up you say? or the transfer was interrupted, (could you check your Sysprefs-> Energy Saver mode stuff... you machine could be falling asleep during tranfer)

Please set the write-protect tab _ON_ cards in the camera, and put camera into USB2.0 mode and do this over a USB cable holding down the MCR button until USB-DEVICE shows up (menu settable), while camera is not running from batteries but from the power supply tether cable.
