Problem with footage from Premiere

My friend cut a film I shot and now when I play the footage back, there are small boxes all over the screen, like a grid pattern. They aren't horribly visible, but bad enough where I may have to cut a lot of scenes over again. He cut it on Premier 6.5 and I'm doing the viewing and extra cutting on Final Cut. The boxes are most noticable on shots that had more effects and color correction done on them. there is also some discoloration on some shots.

Is there anything I can do to avoid having to re-cut?

Could you post a frame grab to show the box effect you're talking about? It almost sounds like a compression issue. Like maybe your friend was saving some files in a lossy format. But it's very difficult to diagnose without a bit more info.

Here are two shots that are messed up. I boosted the contast a bit to show the problem better. I've noticed that the scenes most affected are those which have had more effects added. It seems when my friend added more effects, it messed up the overall picture. I don't think he watched the footage on a big screen, so he probably didn't notice.

Here are two examples:

This one had color correction done to it.

This one had a small green screen effect done in the back.

The first one looks like a poorly compressed web video. I'm wondering if your friend did any moving between applications and saved the footage a few times using a DV setting.

Maybe take a look at your workflow. Backtrack until you see where the problem started. I'm stumped...but you've inspired me to break out the old 6.5 and try to re-create the problem.

can you post pics of the raw footage ? What'd you shoot on?

I gotta dig up the raw footage. The first shot is originally a bit on the dark side, so I think he tried to boost the brightness and did some extra work to it. The second shot was originally in color and filters were thrown on with some green screen as well.

I shot on the DVX.

Nice images, hell, nice effect! Maybe you should do the whole movie that way! Kinda looks like you shot it off a comic-book or something!

Trust me, when the scenes are in motion, it looks terrible.

Unfortunately, he just transferred the cut to an external drive and dumped all the work files off of his computer, so we can't go back any steps. It seems I'll have to re-create a bunch of scenes that are damaged.

I notice this problem is heavy on shots that had some keying effects done and shots that had the brightness and color boosted. Somehow these specific effects did something to mess up the overall picture, but no one would notice it until the image is put up on a larger screen.
