Problem with CD audio in project

I'm having trouble bringing in audio from a CD and/or .wav files into Vegas to put to footage. I import the media, but when I open the files in the trimmer, I don't get any sound. I see the wave levels, but I can't hear anything. BUT, if I click to open the files from Vegas in an external audio editor, they appear and play just like they should. Also, I can hear the dialogue and sound from the dv tapes, so it's not that I had the volume turned down or off or anything. Any ideas? Am I bringing it in to Vegas wrong perhaps?
