Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

When you plug your DVX into the computer and turn it on, is there a pop up from the task bar recognizing it as the DVX100?

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Hey, sorry for the delay :-/

Yeah it recognizes it as the Panasonic DVX100
but it still doesnt capture in Premiere 1.5 Pro :(

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

..try changinbg the device controls in premiere to any other option available for 1394 control if you have any.

also..you do have the camera set to VTR mode and not camera mode.. right?

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

I also had the same problem and couldn´t resolve it. I had to get back to premiere pro 7.0. But if you or anybody knows how to do it, thanks for helping.

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Hi guys,

I'm facing the exact same problem... I've been capturing from my DVX100A with PPro 1.5 for months without any glitch, using a basic IEEE1394 card, and now it doesn't work. I get the same message as Obi Wan : "Can't activate recorder. Try resetting camera".

Switching the DVX on and off (always in VTR mode, obviously), rebooting the PC several times... no cigar. When I connect the camera to the FireWire cable, Windows XP beeps its usual "ding-dong", a camera icon appears in the system tray and the device itself appears in the "My Computer" window, where it is identified as "Panasonic DV camera" (or rather, the French equivalent thereof). When I switch the camera to VTR mode, the icon in the system tray disappears but the device remains listed in the "My Computer" window.

In the "DV Device Control Options" of PPro, the Status says "Online". When I switch the DVX to Cemra mode and update the status, it changes to "Offline" (as it should), but when I switch it back to VTR mode, updating the status doesn't make it change back to "Online". Only when I switch the camera off and then back on does it change to "Detected" (in Camera mode) and then to "Online" (in VTR mode). Altering the other settings ("PAL Generic", "PAL Panasonic", etc.) doesn't seem to make any difference.

Trying to capture in Windows Movie Maker (as suggested here in another thread) doesn't work either : "No video device detected", it says.

However, when I click on the tape transport buttons in the Capture window of PPro, it triggers the corresponding functions on the camera (Play, Pause, Fast Forward, etc.), so PPro "sees" the DVX and can interact with it : the tape rolls, as evidenced by the noise and the camera's LCD and viewfinder, but no picture appears in the Capture monitor.

I've tried to describe in as much detail as possible what's happening. I'm very puzzled because it always worked fine before, and the only change I made in my PC config since then is the installation of WinXP Service Pack 2.

Could this have caused the problem ? I'm now considering throwing SP2 away (doesn't seem to do much for me anyway in terms of added security), and even going through a full reinstall of XP on a new hard disk... which means a full day's work between making backups and reinstalling all the software !

I would very much appreciate any input you may have. I've got tons of footage to capture and I'm feeling quite lost here...

Thanks very much in advance.

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

i think i remember there was another thread about someone having issues after installing windows SP2.. sounds like that may have somethng to do with it..  :-/

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Yes, I've stayed away from SP2 for these very reasons. Adobe acknowledges there are problems with Premiere and SP2.

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

I first tried to deactivate XP's firewall, just in case (no dice), then I uninstalled SP 2... still no dice ! :'( :'(

"Can't activate recorder. Try resetting camera", with the exact same symptoms and behavior as described in my post above. Darn !!

I guess I now have no other option than reinstalling everything on a new drive... which annoys me no end.

Will keep you posted if I survive the ordeal. >:( >:(

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Try deleting the preferences file for Premiere. That solves some problems and may save you doing a complete reinstallation.

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Hi Disjecta,

Tks for your interesting suggestion... which unfortunately came too late...

Anyway, I've renstalled XP (minus the SP 2) on a larger drive, and everything is back to normal now.

Tks to all of you who helped. This place rocks, as always ! ;)

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Yes, I was going to suggest... you must install windows XP if this problem ends up occurring. I think it has something to do with installing 1.5 on a system that has had a previous version of premiere on it... I was the one that started that other thread.

I think I'm going to make a thread warning people of this problem and the solution to fixing it, which isn't a very convenient one...

Also, why does he get like 10 replies and I get 1 for my problem :P PSH!

No it doesn't, in my experience. At first, I installed 1.5 without deinstalling 1.0 first, because I thought the new version might need to check for the presence of the older one, and everything went fine. Now I know 1.5 only needs your valid 1.0 serial number to install itself.

My final conclusion is twofold : (1) XP's Service Pack 2 creates a major problem when capturing in PPro 1.5--at least when you use the DVX as deck ; and (2) installing SP 2 must induce very deep modifications in the OS and/or in PPro 1.5, which can't be undone by "simply" uninstalling SP 2, because the problem remains after uninstallation (subject to Disjecta's idea to delete PPro's Preference file).

My recommendation therefore is to stay away from SP 2 !

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Just to throw a kink into your theory.... I have Premiere Pro 1.0 and Premiere Pro 1.5 both installed and use a Panasonic DV-910 as a playback deck (its a handycam type device) and a Canon XL2 and I have the same exact problem. I haven't even remotely considered SP2 for XP so that is not the culprit here.

My temporary workaround is to us PPro 1.0 to capture and PPro 1.5 to edit.

Hope we all find an answer!

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

SEE! It's not SP2... I never touched sp2 as well... it has something to do with multiple versions of premiere on one computer... :P

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

ok,
I just formatted my hard drive and installed Premiere pro 1.5.
no service pack 2 or Premiere 6 this time, fresh hard drive etc.
but still it is not recognizing anything.
this sucks, it has been a week since I bought PP1.5 and still no game!
>:(

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

If you have premiere 1.5 and SP2, rename the PPro exacutable from "Adobe Premiere Pro" to "Premiere Pro". SP2 changes the operatind enviornment when it detects a program called "Adobe Premiere Pro" starting. It does nothing if a program called "Premiere Pro" starts.

I know this sounds wierd, but it is documented on Adobe's website.

Let me know if this helps anyone.

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Do not install SP2, that was the problem in my case. I basically formated my drive install SP1 and everything works perfect for now of course. I know there are a few bugs in pro 1.5. I hope this helps if any..

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

Red Spider, did you receive the "Can't Activate Recorder, Try Resetting Camera." message?
What´s the problem with that .........PROGRAM?

Re: Problem with capturing in Premiere 1.5 Pro

ellegrand

Yes, I got the exact same message as you all did. AP1.5 still has a few bugs. The best thing to do is start from scratch, format,XP pro, SP1, and thats it. Thats what I did and it worked. If that doesn't work try using Vegas. It caputres 24p too.
