Problem with 24p in 29.97 timeline...

I imported some 24p dvx footage from iMovie into Final Cut Pro. In FCP, the clips all read at 29.97 which is to be expected.

Problem: Every time I export the FCP project as a quicktime movie, I get lots of interlacing lines wherever there is movement in the frame. This is for web streaming, so I need to fix this.

Do I need to change the timeline, sequence or compressor settings?

Any help would be awesome.

I am completely new at this, so forgive me if the answer is painfully obvious.

Thanks!

Jared

If you want to avoid interlacing for the web (i.e. need progressive) then you will need to edit progressive.
All footage at 24p would have to be reverse telecine in Cinema Tools and edited in a 23.98 sequence. FPS needs to be set for the sequence before you add any clips. (Sequence setting) Shooting 24pa and just capturing in FCP with advanced pulldown removal would have been the easiest and avoided multiple steps.

I used Cinema Tools pulldown removal on one of the clips, and it now says 24 fps instead of 29.97 under that clip's properties.

I started a new sequence in FCP with the 23.98 easy setup, then added the clip.

But every single movie I've compressed from this sequence is still showing tons of tearing/interlacing at every point of movement. I've tried Sorensen 3, H.263, H.264, DV NTSC, MPEG4, same results.

Any ideas?

Step through the sequence. The compressor codecs won't create interlacing (unless you've really changed some settings) Changing codecs not going to change interlace.
You're rendering from the sequence right?

one thing i can tell you is that i hate compressing in FCP although i'm a huge fan of FCP. instead, i use Sorensen Squeeze to compress my video, and it works out really good for me. i mean no interlace that appeared like what you're saying.

or,

if you still wanna solve the problem within apple software AND if you have Compressor *2,* i just found out it offered quite nice compression. Open up Compressor 2 in FCP by selecting export->using compressor. you will need to choose one of the options when you click your project under preset column. you will need to choose MPEG-4 since you are compressing for the web. Then, you will see all kinds of options that you can tweak in *inspector window.* Make sure to set up all the options as what it is on your source video (i.e. frame rate). Field dominance should be set as *lower.* Also, select 2-pass VBR, which means it will calculate data on your video twice before encoding. I can't think of more options off the top of my head. After carefully tweaking those options, you probably want to save those so that you don't have to go through all that next time. Good luck.

if you keep having problems... I would recapture your footage in FCP from your camera... Do your pulldown on capture.... be done with it. Edit on your 23.98 timeline. Then export with the same frame rate. Sounds like you've been corrupting your footage somewhere to me. (If your pulldown isn't done currectly your going to have problems.) The best of luck to you. Stay positive.... this is a great forum... somebody will rescue you....
