Problem w/ new Mic

I just bought a brand new boom pole and mic. The problem is that it sounds like it's recording wind or just like air indoors. It hardly picks up the voice of the actor talkking. Is this because im holding the mic to far away from the actor? i plug the mic into the second input jack and i turn channel a and channel b to the second input option. I dont adjust the gain. I don't use the automatic volume limiter. Also whats the difference between mono and normal? THANKS.

I tried that but i still get the same sound of windlike noise or something. What's th difference between mono and normal. Those are the actual swtiches on the mic.

I dunno - you don't mention what kind of mic or anything. You probably want mono...? Does the mic need phantom power or a battery?

You're hearing the room and yes the mic is probably too far from the actor (why? 'cause for most people it ALWAYS is) Turn the ALC to "ON" and make sure your in-cam gain is at -50db and NOT at -60db.

Do some test speech and on the loudest peaks you should get 2-3 reds to light up on the LCD. The mic should NEVER be more then 3' away from the speaker's mouth(s)... get in tight and set levels to suit.

Cheaper mics hear less forward and more surrounding environment. As you go up the dollar ladder for shotguns they progressively hear more and more of what they're pointed at and less and less of everything else.

From the way you describe it I'm SURE what you're hearing is enhanced room-tone from a mic which is gained too high and too far from the actor(s). Oh yeah, and set it to mono.

Check that the mic input is set to MIC not LINE and that phantom (+48v) is ON if the mics manual says the mic needs it.

But MattinSTL is probably right. Gold members usually are.

Are you listening thru headphones to the camera? Is it room noise or hiss? The DVX headphone circuit is pretty noisy (hissy), best to check actual recording in your NLE. You may not even have a problem...

My vote is with timapter...you didn't mention whether you have it set for line or mic, but you need to set it to mic. (But, I also agree that Matt is also usually right. ;-)
