Problem opening old Premiere project

I have a few final things to take care of in Premiere CS4 before finally doing the CS5 upgrade.
When trying to open a CS3 PP project that requires pointing it to the location of archived clips, I get a "Cannot Link Media" prompt saying "The selected file cannot be linked because it has 1 audio channel and the clip was created with 2 audio channels." This is despite the fact that the file has both audio channel files right alongside it in the folder.
Any clues or suggestions? Would CS5 be more likely to succeed at this?
Thanks in advance.

Some of the footage isn't used on the timeline -- in fact I'm getting the warning when opening the project as it searches for all the clilps. What seems to be working so far is to select "offline all" when opening the project, then manually link all of the assets in the project window. It's tedious and time consuming since I have hundreds of them in various scattered folders, but so far so good.

One lesson I've learned here (besides CS4 does not like CS3) when using clips from other projects is to copy every one into the current project folder in case you have to revisit it later.
