Problem ingesting Canon XH-A1 1080i footage into FCP 7

I have some footage that was shot with the Canon XH-A1 camera in 1080i/60. Footage was shot to Standard Panasonic PQ MiniDV tape. I gave my tapes to a friend who owns a Sony HVR-M25AU deck to ingest the footage to my Hard Drive so I could begin editing. He was having all kinds of problems importing into FCP 7. He could see the footage on the screen on his deck but when played back a test ingest recording nothing but black was playing back in FCP. He said he changed the codecs several times and at one point he got the video to show up in FCP but it was frozen on a single frame. It would not playback past that frame. At first we thought it may have been the tape being as though we used Panasonic PQ tapes with the Canon but that didn't seem to be it. Our last resort, I suggested he try to bring in the footage into iMovie and using the EASY import setting. He did that and he was able to FINALLY get the import to work!

We still are trying to troubleshoot to see why we import into FCP though in case he or I runs into this problem again. If iMovie didn't work, we were gonna try importing right from the Canon camera that was used to shoot the b-roll to see if that would work.

If you have run into this problem before either using the Canon XH-A1 camera or the Sony HVR-M25AU deck and found a way to import 1080i footage into FCP with no issues, we sure would like to hear from you! Like I mentioned he went through a slew of codecs and nothing seemed to be working but it worked with iMovie for some reason!

Try cineform" NEO SCENE" You can try it free for 7 days. This will convert your footage to AVI, and with 4:2:2 color space. You can keep it the same frame rate, but deinterlace it. That may be your best bet. Maybe somone out there can verify this as I use premire cs4 mostly.

Try to find a program by searching 'transcode XHA1 HDV files to FCP 7' to find a program to convert HDV files to suitable FCP7 format ProRes 422, and then importing prores 422 to fcp 7 could be easier.

It's called Compressor, you already own it. Does a fantastic job if you've already captured as native HDV and want to batch convert it all to any format you'd need. I highly recommend the book "Apple Pro Training Series: Compressor 3.5" to all FCP users. Only about $30 on Amazon, explains everything you need to know about Compressor and the art of compression.

You can also capture your HDV native or as ProRes 422, too. See the user manual sections linked here.
