Problem Capturing in fcp with ibook

ok, so here's my issue.. last night i did the latest software update to osx tiger 10.4.5.
i brought my laptop to school today cause i had tv production.. all week i've been capturing with the school's tape deck and it's been working fine. BUT now that i've done the latest update, i can no longer capture.. final cut does not recognize the video device. I know it's not the tape deck or the firewire cable because i tried two different firewire cords and two different cameras.. also, the tape deck/ camera was recognized on the school's ibooks which are running on 10.4.2 (because of no internet yet).
but if anyone know's what's going on or has a similar problem, help me out..
thanks a lot.

try going to user>library>preferences>fcp user data and trashing the preferencees in there.

you'll have to reset your scratch discs and everything when you restart fcp, but trashing those prefs cures a lot of ills.

well i deleted all the preferences.. But, i remember asking a friend if he's ever had the problem after updating and he told me yes.. He also said he messed with/ deleted so many different prefferences.. then apple finally just came up with another update.
