Probably a stupid head question...

Sorry guys, I seem to only ever post questions that are probably glaringly obvious. It's just that most of my queries are already answered by trawling through previous topics.

Anyhoo. I've got a Gitzo 2380 head, but no legs at the moment. I've tried the head before though by screwing it onto a manfrotto tripod. However, now with it dissembled (just the head on it's own) no matter how loose I make the pan friction, I can't move the base of the head by hand. Is this normal (i.e. can only really be moved with enough force when mounted on a tripod) or is it possible I've damaged it while unscrewing it from the tripod thread?

The only reason I'm asking is that my 30 days return time is ticking down while I'm sitting waiting for my 525MVB legs to arrive. I Don't want to find out the head is f**ked when it's too late and I can't return it. I've no other tripod to test it on.

Can't really say... I have a Vinten tripod (made by Manfrotto) but I've never taken it apart. What you describe doesn't sound normal at all to me, though, for what it's worth...

nOsignal,

I'm not quite sure I understand what it is you did by screwing the Gitzo head on the Manfrotto sticks.

I have a Gitzo 2380 head which mounts via the 75mm ball into the bowl of my Gitzo sticks.

Does your Manfrotto tripod have a 75mm bowl?

Re: Probably a stupid head question...

Hi guys. Sorry for wasting your time. I took my head into work today and tried it on the first threaded tripod I could find (a rather pants Unilock one). It worked fine, I guess the friction is too high to rotate the base plate by hand when not on a tripod.. when mounted, it works a treat.

Again, sorry I wasted your time. I'm a dunce!! :-/
