Does anyone here work with this?
I mainly for audio people but i may land a job that will teach me how to use this.
I just want to be ahead of my game.
Is it anything like the audio functions in Premiere, Final Cut, or Avid, just more in depth?
Know of any sites with tutorials?
I just want to get a basic understanding of it.
If anyone has ANY information it will be greatly appriciated!
Thank you.

Hey infokill, Pro Tools is one of the best Audio programs out there. When you install the proper plugins, it can be amazing. I'm very new to Pro Tools but I have used other programs similar and I can tell you that Pro Tools is way better. The version you can have at home is Pro Tools LE. You get this free when you buy any of the Digidesign hardware. I would suggest the MBOX because it's mobile and 100% usb powered. It's also the cheapest $389 on ebay from a certified dealer. For training I would suggest www.vtc.com they have over 300 courses online and its the best I have seen for the price. You can have access to all those courses for only $30 a month. The good news is that you can sign up for only one month then cancel if you want to. They have courses on everything. I use them alot for my training or when I have to know how to get around a program fast. Hope this help...

Thanks for the info jonaswray!
One detail i forgot to mention is i dont have a Mac :)
So im unable to download a free trial.
What i really want to see is the interface. See if its anything like the editing programs im used to.
Im sure i'll have no problem learning, but like i said ahead of my game ;)
Its a little to late to buy any tutorials in time, but if you know of a demo of a tutorial online some where that would be super.

Hey infokill, I don't use a mac either so we are on the same page... It's a pain that Digidesign doesn't have a free version for Windows XP. So I had to spend the money on the MBOX. The way I looked at it was as an investment for work/education. The lessons on the vtc.com site can be for both macs and pc and its all online. You just have to change some keys for the shortcuts. You can choose to watch online or buy the DVDs...

I use pro tools everyday. I am a freelance sound designer. It is different than FCP, Premier, or AVID, in that those programs are made for picture editorial. Pro Tools is made for audio recording and editing. Trying to edit audio in a picture editorial program is a colossal pain in the butt. There is a ton to know about pro tools that cannot be summed up in a paragraph or two. If you are really interested in it, go to your local pro tools dealer, or get pro tools certified. You can run it on Mac or PC. However, the demo versions only run on Mac OS9 or Windows 98. You can get an MBox for around $500, which is basically their entry level system. If you are trying to be a one man band, I recommend against it. Every person I know that has tried to shoot, do picture editorial, AND sound editorial realizes it's too much, and usually has someone else do the sound work. Of course, if you are looking to specifically get into post sound work, then it's a different story.

I agree with Dave, there is also a great book called Pro Tools Power! And if you are getting into that stuff, I recommend Steinberg's Nuendo. I have also cut on Pro Tools and both are great programs. Nuendo is hardware independent where Pro Tools requires their hardware.
