Pro directional mic for Canon HV20

I just bought a Canon HV20 and wonder what kind of directional microphones you people recommend for this camera?

I have a Sennheiser MKE300 which pick up speech very good, but with no bass.

Røde Videomic has more bass, but I don't find it very useful indoors. When I tested it I got a very hollow sound in small rooms. Outdoors I got a lot of wind noice. Much more than from my Sennheiser, even when using a "dead cat".

I would like to buy a better directional microphone, that can be camera mounted (maybe with the Røde SM3 hotshoe mount).

Because HV20 is such a small camera the microphone can't be to long, and of course it must be battery powered and have a minijack connector.

What should I buy? Can you give me suggestions? In advance - thank you! :cheesy:

Did you try searching the forum for this info? This has been asked many times and there are many many possibilities based on intended use and budget.

As a general rule, shotguns are awful indoors because they pick up a lot of reflected sound. They are really outdoor tools. That said, sometimes that's all you have and you have to do the best you can.

I have the Canon DM 50, which was designed for that camera. It's small and inconspicuous. It suffers from all the problems of using a shotgun indoors, but it is certainly better than the built in mics. It runs off hotshote power, so no battery needed and you do not need a cable!!

Going forward, you'll find that the answer to most audio issues is to buy the best you can and than determine how to connect it to the HV 20; in other words, if you really need a hypercardioid boom for indoor work...get one.

Cheers,
Bob
