Pro Audio Cards

What are you guys using for output to mixing boards from your computers? Im using the M-Audio Audiophile USB but this is my second one and im returning it today for problems with the volume control. I had to return the first one for other problems.

I'm using a Tascam FW-1884, but that is admittedly overkill for most applications.

(Talk about a sweet setup for Audio, though!)

Allows for surround sound mixing, motorized faders, 8 XLR inputs, ADAT and lightpipe outputs, the works. Firewire to the host (Mac G5 in this case) and sounds amazing.

My audio recordist partner uses the M-Audio Firewire 410 with success, that's a bit more reasonable price (and portable, too!).

I was looking at the firewire 410 but didnt want to put another device on firewire. I get that delayed write failed problem after more than 3 devices on th card. I tried all the registry tweaks and the program that slows the transfer rates too and it helped up to a point.

You could always toss in another firewire card, they're dirt cheap.

I'm using the Presonus Firepod-- firewire, 8 i/o with 8 mic pres, 24 bit, sounds great, great latency. I'm very happy with it. And you can get them for under $600 with Cubase LE.

I'm with you bro! I too harnest the 1884. It's great but I'm still trying to work out the little bugs.

I also have the Audiophille 24/96 and that works like a charm. I replaced all the SBAudigy cards with the audiophile.

I'm running Cubase/Sound Forge.

Can you buy a good audio card with an off the shelf PC (Dell, HP, etc), or do you need to upgrade after the purchase?

I don't see a problem. My work has a Dell and I later took the SBlive card that was in it and replaced it with an Maudio card.

I have used a firewire 410 on a friends laptop and they are really sweet. It might be good to get a second firewire card if you're having problems, because the 410 is a great device....

Well if you want to do pro clean audio, forget about these cheapo game cards that don't feature at least a balanced audio in. Unless you have a Spdif input on these cards and a mic pre with spdif out don't even waste your time looking at them.
I have pretty good results using a Tascan US428, 24bit 48khz audio, 4 inputs, 8 mix faders, master fader, eq controls, and compatible with most apps, good enought for any indy post type of work.
The only issue I have with that product is that it does not give you Phantom power for condenser mics, So I added a nice Presonus tube mic pre ($100) in the chain and I can use my expensive mic with any app, and it sounds darn good!!!
