printing on DVD's

Thanks Dave.

So basically the guy didn't know what the hell he was saying?

Which of the two(white or silver) do you guys recommend? Or what purpose do either serve if there is a difference.

Does the printer come with templates for making the dvd's on say photoshop? If not where do you get the templates to match the printer?

Thanks.

Well, a printer can't print white, so the white has to come from your media. A silver disc gives an interesting depth to a photo. Some really like the look and it's all they use.

The printing software which comes with the printer will import photos, so you can make them on any software. It's a fairly simple thing, and it's really not a bad program in its right. But you should be able to use the paper templates in other programs, much as you can use Avery label templates in Word. I've found they're compatible with many disc label-making programs, anyway.

Just yesterday I went to Staples enquiring about the Epson printer. They had the R300 in stock, but the guy informed me that they only printed onto special DVd's that came with basically a sticker already attached, and that the dvd's were $3 a piece.

I was hoping to purchase a 50 stack of white inkjet or silver inkjet dvd's for a way cheaper price than $3 a dvd.

From reading your guys threads I'm getting the impression I don't have to buy the special dvd's, please inform this uninformed guy on what I can print with that printer.

Thanks.

The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I use the R200. I get white inkjet printable 4xDVD-R (Ritek) from Supermediastore.com - 100 pack for $39.00. They work great and they look great.

I use the i865 & the print quality is good but it does not print to the centre, My friends Epson prints to a smaller centre circle.

So I bought the R200. Works great, thanks all for the good advice!!

Hope i can get an answer here without starting a new thread...

How can I, or is it possible/easy to make up the dvd labels in Photoshop? Or am I stuck making them in the Epson Print Center?

The Print Center is working fine, but I love photoshop and have grown acustom to it and would prefer to create the dvd labels there if possible. If i can, how do I?

I simply measured the standard amaray case and made my own template. I had to fiddle with the borders a bit but I now get awsome looking inserts. The r200 can do it all. Happy printing!

you can make the labels wherever (i use photoshop) and then just import than as an image into the epson porint center software and scale them down to fit the cd /dvd layout.

I recently bought the R200 and was amazed. Better than the stupid labels I was using by far. FYI to everyone. Sams Club sells the th R200 for $79.95. Thats cheaper than Comp USA sells the ink cartridges alone. So I bought two, robbed the cartridges out of the second one, and am saving for when the infamous plastic piece goes bad. The next time I went to Sams, they were selling the entire cartridge set for $59.95. I think thats even cheaper than most online prices. Also, I found an online dealer that advertises in DV Magazine thatsells printable media VERY reasonably priced. www.issidata.com I'm trying out their media to see if theres any problems. Works fine on all my machines so far. Has anyone else tried them?

If you use compatible inks make sure you don't mix them with the brand name inks. You can get some screwy results.

I've got the Epson R300, and had good results with it, but inkjet is still inkjet & can run/bleed when in contact with sweaty hands (client's), water spilled on it, etc. To compensate, I'd always put two thin coats of acrylic spray over the top (place DVD on wax paper, allow to dry a few hours in between coats for best results). It's amazing how much depth & gloss is added not to mentioned added life from the wear & tear.

Just recently I purchased a Rimage Everest II thermal retransfer printer, but it's in a whole other class and runs several grand.

I just bought the Epson R220 at Best Buy for $105- and then there's a $50 mail-in rebate! $55 for an inkjet printer. Man, I remember the day when... well.. I wont go there.

I use third-party inks on my R200 ("Salute") -- about $30 for a complete set (Epson ink sets are around $100 over here). They work great, and last longer than Epson cartridges (are probably filled completely.)

I use the Epson R300. I bought it online somewhere for under $100. The off brand inks work fine but don't run out or you will be down at best buy like I was shelling out over $100 for stinking ink. I use a lot of ink and do the DVD package inserts with the same printer, which i shouldn't. I do have a problem with the feed tray needing a little push to get going. Also I have to stop the job and then resume job on each DVD. I'm using a macintosh with 10.4 something.

Yeah, I'd have to give that little tray a push as well (or at least keep tension/pressure on it so it'd grab & feed in) when I was using it for DVD printing.

One reason third party ink is cheap is that it's not accurate. I'm working on prepping artwork for DVD covers and I've realized that my R200 is printing slightly green right now. And not consistently at that. I've heard the original Epson ink cartridges are more accurate, and I actually believe it. Cheap ink is probably okay for consumer applications, but when you start to expect more you might be disappointed. Then again if you're using an R200 you're probably not too worried perfect quality.

But for cheaply printed DVD's I'm pretty happy with it.
