Anyone else noticing the prices of cameras suddenly dropping on ebay? Not sure if its an economy thing or if it's because of the recent NAB (and GH1, etc). But the D90 is with a lense is going for under 900 bucks. I saw three EX1s going for just over 4K -- and a pair of them going for 6K (though that listing has a day or so left).

I wonder what's changed so dramatically in the last 3 months...?

It's called 11% unemployment in California, I can't imagine what it is in the midwest including Detroit and we are still searching for the bottom of the recession. People are desparate for money and I would estimate that around 40% of users spend their money unwisely or worse yet, spend money that they don't have and put their production gear on high interest credit cards.

Look how many people on DVXUser buy new cameras almost monthly, there are a lot of them and most of them aren't working pros, making money to pay this stuff off.

It's so odd being in Chicago which is considered being part of the midwest, because economic woes just aren't prevalent here -- in the city. I'm sure in the suburbs it's rank, but when you live in the nicer sections of a metropolis you are kind of insulated from all the outlier stuff.

But yeah -- good point about people buying random stuff with no real means of making it pay off. I got into filmmaking about a year ago and although I have the money to purchase good equipment I've forced myself to buy and piecemeal together a camera here, a camera there. One of my cameras, no joke, is an old DSR 200 with a tiny flat-screen TV hooked up to it because it doesn't have a viewfinder -- 105 bucks for solid SD footage (good for faux news stuff and some web-based stuff).

Eventually I'll break down and buy a set of cameras -- but I'm SO thankful that I didn't drop 15K on a set-up just to learn on. Even though I've been a stout fan of the EX1 and the MK2 (both of which are holding up nicely), I think I'll be a much better filmmaker after having had to use junk cameras to produce narrative. My friends and I are even doing a web-based production using all the cameras and equipment I'm currently working on -- just to see how good WE can make it look, instead of it looking okay simply because of some camera. We're doing so much in sound, lighting, script, make-up effects and performance to make up for the fact that I refuse to buy higher end stuff until we can prove that we can make something awesome with crap equipment (well, the mics aren't crap -- but they're not stupid expensive, either. Oktava).

But yeah, this forum along with Video co-pilot (along with about 27 different filmmaking books I've read) -- this is the happiest I've been in the arts ever (and I've been painting, writing, drawing, acting, playing music and photographing since I was a kid -- until about a year ago I truly thought film was something only people who had access to film equipment and a ridiculous budget could produce.) For all the garbage that is coming out because of the accessibility of HD equipment, I for one feel so blessed that film isn't something unattainable anymore...

Ack! Tangent and off-topic. The joy just bleeds out sometimes, though, right?

:D

I try and keep my gear lust to a dull roar, you can't be stupid with that, running up credit cards and such.

LOL at dingos. You fiscally sound Canadians.
