i have been asked to name a price to produce tutorial videos. about 5 mins in length. i have never done these type of videos before and dont have an idea of what i should charge.

the videos will be teaching software so it will be half a person sitting and talking, and then switching to captured screen video.

anyone do a similar job and care to share pricing?

Do you have an hourly or day rate you normally charge? If so, that is really the best place to start. Figure how many hours/days you will have invested in each and mark it up a little to cover any unforeseen circumstances.

$200 per finished minute is a good STARTING point for this type video, assuming you have reasonably good production ability, and on up from there as you "climb the ladder" skills wise. Will vary according to market.

Yes this is a fair approach from the client's perspective. Of course, before going with a "finished minute" contract scheme, you'll certainly want the contract to cap your agreement on the number of recording sessions and total time. You don't want to get stuck if the client is unprepared, has numerous changes/reshoots, gets distracted/interrupted with other duties, etc.

You might also want to consider upselling value-added services, offering a two-tier pricing schedule. The low price would be more "point and shoot" while the premium price would offer lots of extras: tailored lighting, sound effects, music, camera angles, lighting, set design/preparation/wardrobe recommendations, editing effects, etc.

In summary, we always want to do a CUSTOMER NEEDS ASSESSMENT to ensure our proposal meets the client's expectations, along with a value-added enticement.

Happy Trails, Michael
