In case anyone is interested, BH dropped the price on the 680 MKII: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1116651-REG/tascam_dr_680mkii_8_track_field_recorder.html

Yeah, Rick, I am taking a "wait and see" approach, too. I am trying to move up from the first Tascam 680 but I am torn between an SD702 (which can be had for 1100-1200 used) and the F8. I don't usually use more than 2 inputs, so that's not an issue, but I'm leery of Zoom's lack of quality in the past.. You know, Zoom's NA headquarters are by us in Ronkonkoma, New York -- maybe I'll stop by and ask them if they have a working unit to play withB&H is probably taking pre-orders for the Zoom F8.. and getting nervous.
I have a wait-and-see attitude.. it certainly looks impressive.. but nobody worth spit has actually used it, or commented on it yet. I will surely not be selling my SD recorders anytime soon. I would consider it as a low-cost back-up.. But naturally I'm skeptical of low-price/low-quality products.
