That's a heck of a price drop. Basically cut in half but only till July 9, 2013.

This is a slim camera with the same sensor as the Canon 7d. If you already have some canon glass and want a small pocket cam that shoots video this is a no brainer. Carry this around everywhere and pop off some test shots, or heck this would make an inexpensive crash cam when you don't want to risk your A cam on a risky situation. I suppose you could strap this to your RC helicopter?

It makes a cheap directors VF too.

I have a T3i. I find this very intriguing because I want to carry around a smaller camera.

Will there be any difference in the visual quality of video or photos shot with this camera?

How is Magic Lantern with this camera? Basically the only thing I use Magic Lantern for is to dial in specific color temperatures.

Same sensor as the 7d, shoots 1080p 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps and it's 300 bucks. What more do you want for 300 bucks? I doubt the Magic Lantern guys are going to spend time on it, but who knows.

Looks like a nice deal. Backordered until the 11th, looks like. But, I suppose if you order between now and the 9th the deal would stand, eh?

Would have been nice to have something like that while I was overseas visiting family... rather than my cellphone for family pics and such.

they're great but the lcd is tough to use in 50% of your shooting conditions - without an optical viewfinder they work best with wides. I don't even aim, just shoot with a pancake on it!

Fuji is dominating the scene for mirrorless, I would love to own the xpro but my funds are allotted for other things. These are so much more affordable. Nex is a good option too

I think it would be a cool camera to use for time lapse. You could run it into the ground for $300.

Hey Jhoe,

What's up man?

As it turns out, the primary use of my T3i has been for photos, mostly family photos.

What's your opinion of the EOS-M as a replacement for the T3i for the purposes of toddler pictures?

It's a great camera. A small 7D that takes all the 7D lenses with the Canon adapter. It's even better than the 7D for video, as it has the ability to adjust the audio, albeit not real time. There is a new firmware update last week that fixes the autofocus slowness that it suffered under. Mine now focuses as fast as I would assume, though I rarely use it.

If you want to see photos done by one, here's my trip down the Grand Canyon in May. I used the M with it's 22mm and I carried a Sigma 10mm for the widest. Get past the sort of garden variety shots to see the landscapes. Worked great!

2nd gen would probably be coming out. I hope it has the 70d stuff so it becomes more useful. And less alias moire as well

Is it possible they may just be getting rid of the whole EOS M line? Maybe it just didn't sell well enough. I doubt that considering they built a new lens mount and really should have a stake in the mirrorless market. But I can't image these things sell well at the $700-800 mark unless they're packing some killer features.

I think dcloud's explanation is more likely: a second-gen product is coming soon, with the same sensor as the 70D, which seems to be designed with mirrorless in mind (dual-mode pixels so that you can have phase-detect AF even without a mirror).

At $300 with a decent 22mm prime, the M is a steal for photography newbies. Video is only great if you still live by 2010 standards, though.

B&H raised the price for the 22mm kit to $349 with delivery expected July 18. the 18-55 kit is still $349 and is in stock http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/898072-REG/Canon_6609b074_EOS_M_Mirrorless_Digital_Camera.html

Amazon also has the 18-55 kit in stock at $349 and expects delivery of the 22mm kit July 17 for $299 still http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Compact...1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373904374&sr=8-1&keywords=eosm

The 2.02 firmware speeds up the AF by a factor of 2.3x, but it is really not a camera for quick moving subjects IMO.

Given that either of the EF-M lenses alone would run you $220-$279 and that the battery goes for $46, you are getting the strap, the charger and the BODY for next to nothing.

Canon have announced a new 11-22 EF-M lens and are expected to offer more soon. And yes, there are rumors of an EOS-M II coming this year with an EVF.

Video is currently limited to 24/25/30 fps at 1080p and 50/60 fps at 720p, but there is an HDMI out which I understand will allow uncompressed video out.

Magic Lantern has firmware for the EOS-M, and it looks like Canon will continue the line past this first gen body.

A few months back, I read that someone said the EOS-M was "a firmware upgrade and a price cut away from being a great camera". Both of those things have happened.

90 days ago this was a $799 proposition. Now you can buy both kits and get $150 change for the same money.

If I had a Canon DSLR kit, I'd say this was a no-brainer just as a backup.

JMO. YMMV!

It's been a while since I ventured here in the forums, and also my first time trying out the Canon, particularly the EOS M. I can't wait to get my hands on the EOS-M body at special prices on eBay and try it out. I want to try the manual focus since I do have some legacy lenses (Canon EOS F 50mm f1.8 and Minolta MD 50mm f1.7); provided I get an adapter. I certainly hope that the focus methods improve in the new firmware.

I have been using my Panasonic GF2 in most cases with cine-like test shots, some events shots (both video and photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/43200247@N06/6930881512 , http://www.flickr.com/photos/43200247@N06/ & http://www.youtube.com/user/ArtistWandering) and would like to try something different since it's unfeasible for me to get the $1k top of the liners of 5DII/III or the Panny's GH line, and I believe I lost out on the Pentax K-01 deal. Who knows with what ambitions I possess, I'd like to use both cams as an A and B (Canon EosM, and my Panny GF2). I'm also excited about using the picture profile (the Technicolor CineStyle), and the still-in-progress Magic Lantern.

I'm like this, with the price drop as it is now, get it while it's HOT!

Prices have risen in the last few days, so look around. B&H has different prices depending on the color and whether the kit includes the flash. Amazon still offers the 2 basic lens kits at $299 and $349. Other retailers are in the $479-$599 range.

The firmware update (2.0.2) has been pre-installed on the cameras I received. AF is OK, not nearly fast enough for kids or pets, but definitely much faster (up to 2.3x) than the previous firmware.
