What's not talked about is the real reason why all those respectable old-timers trash talk this tool. Namely only a fool would assume that films are made by the numbers. Often it's an instinctual reaction to reality (how the actors behave or move, what lighting exists on the location, how a crew member turns off the lights by mistake and that becomes meaningful metaphor and direction for the scene... There is countless "human elements" involved so all those guys knowing it very well are asking themselves - why the f*** would i waste time with this? Because i haven't setup OTS shot a thousand times before and i need a previs help?? That said though, and that is what probably scares those guys, is that poetry of the mind, search for humanity etc for the most part are things of the past and all those old-time DPs (often at the end of their road) have to face the fact that it's not only their lives that are fading but the mythical and life-changing power of cinema.
