Preview not working for pictures/video

My Preview has stopped working properly when trying to preview files in the Explorer or Project Media tabs.
  • For sound, it still works fine (including sound from .avi files)
  • But for any video (stills or moving video, in any file format), the previewed picture/video doesn't appear in the preview window at all - all that happens is that the existing preview picture (from the current timeline pointer) temporarily shrinks by about 50% to the top middle of the preview window for a few seconds (i.e. the normal time of a preview) then returns to fill the preview window. The same happens for Auto-preview or an explicit Start Preview
Once the same files are added to a video track on my project, they then work fine in the project, it's only the previewing that never works... I suspect I've accidentally pressed a key/icon and switched some setting off?

I'm running Vegas 8.0c (build 260) if that makes any difference

Not certain if it will work but try opening in Trimmer and then play with the three buttons on the right at the head of this screen. These enable/disable the Preview which can be handy depending on your method of working .

Hope it works - worth a try anyway.

Thank you, that does appear to have fixed it - the Show Video Monitor button on the Trimmer tab seems to have been the difference... very mysterious, as I don't usually use the Trimmer, perhaps there's a keyboard shortcut equivalent which I accidentally pressed? Anyway, thanks again :)

No - what happened is you updated to 8.0c. This is a new "feature" in 8.0c that is ON by default. "Why can I no longer preview video?" is one of the most asked questions as well.
