Preview Monitor for Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro for FCP 5.1 w/ ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI) graphics card. I'm going to a 1440x900 LCD display DVI-DVI for priamry display.

For FCP preview, I have a VuSonic 27 LCD HD monitor with a lot of inputs. I'm currently using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with the Mac to the VGA input of the VuSonic, but I can only get the 1280x1024 resolution setting with this, so I'm not able to use the full HD resolution of the monitor.

Can I use a straight DVI-HDMI cable to go to the HDMI input of the VuSonic? and will I see any appreciable difference? and, is there any potential damage?

Get a Black magic Intesnsity card ($300 I believe) and preview out that to the viewsonic 27 via HDMI. Otherwise using a video LCD isn't going to gain you anything over a regualr LCD if you're using the DVI output. You're seeing an RGB proxy vs a true YUV video signal.
