preview clips and adjust before placing on timeline

hey guys,

i just recently tried out vegas and PP2 over the weekend to edit some audition footage recorded on saturday.

I started with vegas, but had a hard time with the trimming of clips to the desired spot before placing it on the timeline.

so, i tired PP2 and found it really easy to use the preview window with the in and out points to trim the clip then drop it to the timeline.

is there a way i can do the same thing in vegas? I'm going to be shooting a short movie with an xl2 and xl h1 in april, sd 24a, and have come to understand from this board that vegas would be the better to handle the footage. I really want to like vegas, but so far it seems a bit harder to use than PP2.

if someone could tell me how to preview, trim then drop i'd be grateful (preferable all on one screen too )

Mikewest13:

At little tip first. In vegas click the Options selection in the header tool bar. Select Preferences at the bottom of the pop-up menu. Look for the check box next to the preference "Double Click on media file opens in Trimmer instead of tracks." Make sure you check this box as it is not the default.

With this checked just double click on any imported clip in the media bin and it will open in the Trimmer window.

With a clip loaded in the Trimmer left click on the mouse hold and drag a selction across the clip. You will see a gray bar form above the upper timeline with a yellow marker at each end. The left marker is the in point and the right marker is the out point of the selection.

Place your mouse cursor over either the in or out point marker or the line that runs down from the points and when it changes to a horizontal line hold the left button down and drag the in or out and view the change in postion in the preview window. You can drag the entire in/out selection by placing your cursor over the gray bar and holding down the left mouse button.

At the bottom right of the trimmer window you will see three timecode windows. The first is the position of the in point relative to the start of the clip you are trimming. The second is the position of the out point and the Third is the length of the trimmed clip in seconds and frames.

When you have finished trimming double click on the gray bar and the selction between the in and out points turns a gray-blue. Simply hit the "A" key on the keyboard and the trimmed clip will be added to the timeline.

Better is to right click the mouse on the selection and from the pop-up menu select "create sub-clip." Click this and a window pops up with a default name inserted. Either leave as is or type your own and then click "OK"

This places the trimmed clip in your media bin. This sub clip retains the duration and in/out points you edited. Simply drag this to the timeline like any other clip.

The sub clip is NOT new media. It is simply a trimmed copy of the master clip. If you delete the master from which the sub clip was created you loose both. You can actually make multiple sub clips from any master clip if you want different trimming options to choose from.

Hope this helps. Once you are used to this it goes very fast but it is totally different from the approach used by PPro.

Yup, just pull the tab part out into open space. Press and hold "Ctrl" if it wants to snap to a dock again as this will prevent it form doing so.

great.... i'll see how that works for me....

i see a lot of people like to edit on the time line, but i like to trim before i place the file.....
