ok so I have some mpeg 1 and mpeg 2 files that I want to use in premiere. For along time I had no problem. Until recently when I import the footage everything works, even the little preview box on top of the library plays the clips fine. BUT when I put the vid. on the timline the video is just black. ANY ideas why?? (I know the files are good, the run fine on windows media and that little preview thing on premiere).

PLEASE HELP.

Premiere Pro edits .mpeg (HDV) just fine. Some people like transcoding to a flat-frame format... but you shouldn't be having ANY problems editing .mpeg files.

...but unfortunately he is having problem editing .mpeg files and as he did not mention HDV or any plugin to deal with HD, I suspect that he is talking "plain jane " mpeg.

Suggest you try Virtual Dubb to change your mpegs to avi.s

no I can make the files .avi any time which I have been doing. The only problem is that I can only make these .avi files 4:3, then I have to stretch them in premiere. Which is fine, BUT it makes the footage all blocky and messed up. While as the .mpeg can be 16:9 and they are a smaller file. Also the thing is, it used to work. Thanks guys for the ideas. And shooter you are correct it is "plain jane" SD footage.

You can bring the footage into AE or Virtual Dub and render it back out as any format you want like a QT or AVI instead of an MPG
