Premiere Settings when using SD 4:3 and HDV 16:9?

I'm putting together a small sequence to be played through a Museums AV Screen. It needs the video has an MP4.

I'm using a combination of SD 4:3 interview footage and HDV 16:9 interview footage with the same subject.

What are the best project and sequence settings when combining clips of the two different formats in order to achieve the best look? I followed some instructions Googled found that said the project settings should be on DV. The sequence ended up rendering a clip where the SD footage was the size of a small thumbnail in the middle of the frame from while the HDV footage looked normal including the black bars above and below the image. How ca I set the sequence up so the final output will have SD footage taking up as much of the screen at the right aspect ratio together with the HDV footage.

Any advice on how to get an mp4 that has both SD & HDV source footage to appear at the right size would be most apperciated!

- Select all of your 4:3 clips
- Right-click, select "Set to Frame Size"
- Export
- Exhale!

The SD footage will never be able to take up the entire frame unless it's zoomed in. During the major SD->HD network transition, a lot of decision-makers kept the sides black as they naturally would be with 4:3 video in a 16:9 frame, or they duplicated a little bit of the left and right sides, moved them left and right to fill out the black, and then blurred them out to taste. Some even had a slight vignette.

IMO, it worked pretty well and you forgot about the mix of 4:3 and 16:9 content pretty quickly. (It worked better on some footage vs. others.)

Here's a sample from WWE who has done this for over 10 years and continues to do so because of their enormous library of wrestling content dating back to 80s and everything they acquired from other territories before then (70s, etc.)

P.S. Your last post was 14 years ago this month...that's gotta be a "last post and come back post" record! haha
